I'm asking Santa for

Since I've an open floor plan, I'll have to put up a plexi wall in order to mount the tv and since I'd have that, I'll put a projector on the floor edge so I can create images, fireplace and stuff into the plexi. Going to be holographic like.

Problem is the whole, "have you been a good boy" stuff. Who came up with that!

That good boy stuff would knock me off the list. I do have aspirations though...

Don't know much about Roku - in fact, nothing about it. I received an Apple TV as a Christmas gift from work and I use it to pick up the Rocket games on a 10 y.o. HDTV.

Isn't Roku mostly for streaming movies? I have heard it is great for that, but you still need to pay for Netflix, etc. to get access to the movies (just going on what I read)

We have a Roku (a couple actually, thanks to using Sling TV) and I like ours. You can load a lot of apps including WatchESPN, Sling, Netflix, Hulu, etc. It is not used exclusively for movies. I paired this with an HD antenna and I can get all network television there and then the ESPNs, FS1/2 and the sports channels through Sling TV. I don't watch much TV outside of football season so this setup allows me to cut cable and just have Sling available during football season. The only disadvantage is some fringe channels are not on Sling, namely, B1G Network and CBSSports. I make due but will need to figure out something for this season with so many MAC games moved to CBSS.

SlingTV is a non-contract online TV service and if you prepay the first 3 months they almost always have a promotion running where they will throw in a free Roku.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

I have a Roku embedded Smart TV and also have a Sling TV subscription ($21.44/month). Concur with SylRocketFan that it meets most of our needs along with some Rabbit Ears to get local channels.

I also have 2-3 Apple TV boxes, Amazon Firestick, another external Roku device as well laying around the house.

RE: OT:TV with Roku
If you are planning to have cable I would think Roku would be superfluous. There are a TON of free channels on it, many with special interest focus. Some are OK, others not so much. The free movie channels do not have a lot of relatively current, good content and there is a lot of duplication among them. Some of them kind of rotate more up-to-date content in and out. You'll find that you go through the better content early and what's left is junk.

I'm glad to have WatchESPN, that way I don't have to watch ESPN3 on a desktop monitor. We have Amazon Prime which we watch through Roku; of course Prime is fee based, just like NetFlix, Hulu, etc. So, in other words, things that are fee based to begin with are still going to be fee based through Roku. Other than WatchESPN, I have not noticed much live content. There are many news channels from local TV stations all over the country, but most are show clips. Some might connect to live news broadcasts, though.

OTOH, if you are looking to cut the cable, Roku should definitely give you more options than OTA TV alone. But, to really open up more current content, figure on having to add at least one fee-based service. I think Prime is a pretty decent value considering everything you get with the subscription.

I have prime (smart choice), netflix (great deal ) along with the expensive Spectrum (formerly Time warner). I pay way too much, the only thing lacking is the Pacific12 station. My son has Roku and loves it. I don't believe he gets the national news channels live on Roku

I have a Roku on one TV, and my other is a Roku smart TV. Love it. Guaranteed every CFL and UT game, most of them in 1080p. Really nice for watching YouTube videos, Netflix/Hulu, just limitless possibilities.

RE: OT:TV with Roku
Ended buying a TCL. Excellent value. Great so far, plenty of free content with Roku. Watched the 2015 Kent State-UT Homecoming game this morning. Boy did the Rockets make a lot of errors. Had forgotten Diontae had 89 yds KO return on the first play called back because of a chop block. Then UT snapped the FB over the punters head for a Kent State score. Terry Swanson had the 88 yds run where he was stopped at the line of scrimmage and then took off, getting bumped out about the 2 yds line. Can't wait for the season.

Yes. Target had it for the same price as Best Buy.

Needless to say I won't be watching Thursday's stream on my MAC.

If anyone decides not to buy me one for fear of insult, really, I have a thick skin.

I did upgrade to a 24 inch LED a few years ago, so ... living a little large. It doesn't have whatever that would let me broadcast my laptop to the screen so still stuck with poor optics of the laptop watching espn3. I might upgrade, soon as I figure it out.
