Fort Worth Gets the AAC Hoops Tourney for 3 Years - 2020, 2021 & 2022
Does this seem strange to anyone else? I lived on the Fort Worth side of D/FW for 11 years, and they don't give a flip about college hoops. Why not give the tourney to a home school to help attendance? And why 3 years? Guess Fort Worth made a good offer.

AAC announced its men's hoops tourney will be held at Fort Worth's Dickies Arena in 2020, 2021 & 2022. Dickies Arena slated to open in 2019.
The 2018 AAC men's basketball tournament will be in Orlando's Amway Center. The 2019 edition is scheduled to be at FedExForum in Memphis.

Doesn't make sense to have it in a location so decentralized that will not really benefit any team in the conference.

I am guessing it is a new $450 million arena and they are trying to get bookings. But....Fort Worth and Sundance Square is a pretty good place to visit. The arena is being built in the Cultural District right near several world class Museums and The Botanical Gardens.
Here is a video on the arena. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_HskWglYWU

I am ok with it assuming they submitted the highest responsive and responsible bid.

Sundance Square is great. Fort Worth's downtown is much more tourist friendly than the Dallas downtown.

There really is no "fair" location, just which group you want to make it more convenient for.
Put in Hartford and only UConn and Temple are close.
Put it in Orlando, then only USF and UCF are close.
Dallas makes it close( r) for SMU, Houston, Tulsa, WSU, and (maybe) Memphis. Flights are cheap.
Memphis is central, but only a day drive for Tulane, SMU, and Tulsa. Flights aren't as cheap.

Agreed Saluki, but the tourney will generate almost zero local interest. College hoops rarely even gets mentioned on the local talk shows in D/FW.
It's Cowboys and Big 12 football pretty much all year. In March, it will be Mavs and Stars and Rangers spring training.
If no city is geographically ideal, would think they would at least put it in a league city.

Is Ft. Worth considered part of Dallas like Tampa/St. Pete or Minneapolis/St. Paul?

pretty much. Lived there a number of years growing up. It's basically the DFW area (Dallas-Ft Worth)

Absolutely. Cowboy and Ranger stadiums are in Arlington, which is actually closer to Fort Worth than Dallas. D/FW airport being right in the middle of the two cities has further connected the two. Locals call it the Metroplex.

I drove through each city recently and it was a seemless span of buildings. Without signs, one could not distinguish the cities.

I guess that's why I was asking. SMU is in Dallas.

SMU and TCU don't get a whole lot of play on TV or sports radio. TCU gets decent coverage in the Star-Telegram and SMU probably less so in the Morning News.
I lived on the Fort Worth side, got the Star-Telegram. Family came to town for the Tiger-SMU game, maybe in '08. Brother-in-law was reading the Saturday morning sports section, couldn't find anything about the game. Asked me if there was an insert for the game. I said this is the TCU paper. We eventually found a paragraph on the game on like Page 8. Obviously would have been front page of sports section in the CA.

RE: Fort Worth Gets the AAC Hoops Tourney for 3 Years - 2020, 2021 & 2022
The Tigers are the top sports entity in Memphis. In the DFW area....TCU and SMU are way down the pecking chart. There are almost 6 million people in the area and both schools have relatively small enrollments. Texas and Texas A&M have almost ten times the number of students.....North Texas has 38,000 students. TCU enrollment is 8,900, SMU has 6,500 undergrads. UT Austin has 51,000 total students...TAMU has 66,500 students. Then throw in the COWBOYS, MAVERICKS, STARS, FC DALLAS, THE RANGERS and now a new WNBA team plus schools with followings such as OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA STATE, BAYLOR and TEXAS TECH and even UT Arlington and there is just a lot of teams to cover and some suffer. I think the Houston ASTROS get more coverage here than SMU and TCU...or at least it seems that way. And....I left out High School Football which is really big here with teams like Allen, Aledo and South Lake Carroll getting plenty of coverage. DFW area schools are usually in the hunt for a state football title every year.

Tourney needs to be played on the Home courts of the highest seeds. We are to spread out. That is the best option. You would have sellouts. Even the championship needs to be on the home-court of the team with the best record. Start the tournament on a Sunday and end it on a Sunday. That way you can have days off for rest/travel.

If the conference is getting good money, go for it. Conference tournies are a money grab anyways
