Well it wouldn't be the first time a team had to change its moniker due to cultural appropriateness.
I suspect it will survive, mainly because the moniker has evolved to be a non-racially charged one, and is rarely used by bigots to describe their movement.

But
Then what?
After all the confederate statues are removed do we take the next step and remove the memorials from slave owning founding fathers? They were just as guilty of promoting slavery as the confederates. They were Even worse, you could argue, as their actions laid the evil practice of slavery in the foundation of our nation.
When does the fighting end and the healing begin?
I understand your point.
"Racial Reconciliation" is not thing. It is not tangible. It can't be seen, held, or measured.
And that's the problem with enacting policies with the objective of "achieving racial reconciliation". We would never know if the objective was met.

F UNC.
Ditto...but...We both know that at every public university in NC there are named buildings that could be purged in all of this. ECU is in that list. The whole idea of removing them is absurd to begin with.

I used to mess around with this artsy tree-hugger girl who went to tiny Warren Wilson College in Asheville. I always got the impression from her that school was very progressive, especially when it came to environmental issues.

Tar Heels name must go. Hope it comes up at their NCAA meeting this week.
Democrats can be racists. Didn't you get the memo.

Governor Roy Cooper has called for the removal of all Confederate monuments.
Coopers comments were published in an op-ed on the website Medium following this past weekends violent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.
"Some people cling to the belief that the Civil War was fought over states' rights. But history is not on their side. We cannot continue to glorify a war against the United States of America fought in the defense of slavery. These monuments should come down," wrote Cooper.

If they want to change it...They can change it. I certainly won't complain if they do.
I'm not defending it, but rather explaining why it might not be changed.
All joking aside, nobody knows where the nickname Tarheel came from. It's thought to have evolved before the Civil War and it was used as a derogatory term until after the Civil War was over.
Just like Hoosiers and Sandlappers, all etymologies are just folk tales.

I wonder what they call it these days....
never gave it a second thought.....
they could've called it, "Imma gonna git ya sucka".....still wouldn't have changed the game unless one has to be "packing" as a requirement.....
that's prolly how it's played today....
Well, one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid was "Song of the South", which incorporated the stories of Uncle Remus including Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby. That movie has been banned for a while. I never thought of the movie in racist terms back them. Its a shame kids can't enjoy it today because it is a wonderful piece of animation, beautifully told, great songs and dance, etc.
you made my day with that one....thank you! I can't tell you how many "Uncle Remus'" I've enjoyed over my short span in the spic/span of real and not
the world needs more of this.....so, to that, I offer pt. deux....
