Frank Broyles - Arkansas Legend - Has Passed Away at Age 92. RIP.
Condolences to all Razorback fans.

Can we post about Broyles on this thread instead of the other one? Certainly would be more respectful.

NY Times articles on Broyles. Retired from coaching at age 52, but still his coaching accomplishments were substantial: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/14/sport...ansas.html

"The Razorbacks had been a doormat for the powerful Texas teams in the Southwest Conference when Broyles left the head coaching job at the University of Missouri to take over the Arkansas football program in Fayetteville in 1958.

By the time he resigned in 1976, at 52, to devote all his time to his other role, as athletic director, his teams had compiled a 144-58-5 record and, in addition to the national title, won six Southwest Conference titles and 10 bowl games."

Broyles was only at Missouri for one season in 1957, but recruited the first two African-Americans to the program that year, integrating the program.

"In his short time at Mizzou, Broyles left behind a pivotal legacy. . ., but it was indeed Broyles who recruited the team’s first two black players, running backs Mel West and Norris Stevenson from Jefferson City and St. Louis, respectively. Both became valuable players in Devine’s offense in his early years at Mizzou."

Broyles was SEC player of the year in 1944 at Georgia Tech - I had no idea:

"Broyles studied at Georgia Tech, where he was a quarterback from 1944 to 1946. . . He led the Georgia Tech football team to four bowl appearances. He was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 1944. Until Michigan quarterback Tom Brady broke his record in 2000, Broyles held the Orange Bowl record for most passing yards in a game . . ."

RE: Frank Broyles - Arkansas Legend - Has Passed Away at Age 92. RIP.
"The 1969 Texas vs. Arkansas football game, sometimes referred to as the "Game of he Century" in which No. 1 Texas visited No. 2 Arkansas at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Longhorns came back from a 14–0 deficit after three quarters to win 15–14."

Much of the backstory for this is not well known. Nixon, Beano Cook and Roone Arledge, AstroTurf installed and no stadium lights:

"The 1969 season marked the 100th anniversary of college football. This game would decide the Southwest Conference Championship, as well as its berth in the Cotton Bowl Classic, and ABC TV executive Beano Cook arranged for Texas and Arkansas to play the final game of the regular season, moving their usual October date to the first weekend in December. ABC Sports executive Roone Arledge persuaded Arkansas coach Frank Broyles to move the game with a promise that President Richard Nixon would attend the game, and ABC would televise Arkansas' season opener in 1970 against Stanford (and its star quarterback, Jim Plunkett). Broyles even talked Arkansas officials into installing AstroTurf, then still a novelty, at Razorback Stadium. The game would kick off at 12:20 p.m. Central Standard Time since the stadium in Fayetteville did not have lights at the time."

"For a long while, it looked as though the game would be a meeting of also-rans. Ohio State was dominating the Big Ten . . ., Michigan and its upstart coach Bo Schembechler upset the Buckeyes. Texas and Arkansas vaulted to #1 and #2 in the polls, respectively. Ultimately, due to good fortune, it worked as the move made the game the focus of the entire American sporting public, gaining a television rating of a 52.1 share, meaning more than half the TV sets in use in the country were tuned to this game.

That set the stage. Even the day took on an eerie feeling. Billy Graham attended to give the pregame prayer. . . as the crowd awaited the arrival of President Nixon, who would award a plaque symbolic of the National Championship to the winner. Due to the lack of a suitable airport in northwest Arkansas to land Air Force One . . ., Air Force One landed at Fort Smith Regional Airport, and Marine One flew from Fort Smith to Fayetteville, landing on the practice fields just east of Razorback Stadium as the game was starting."

No, if you will look up to Post 3, you will see that Broyles integrated the Missouri football team in 1957:

"Broyles was only at Missouri for one season in 1957, but recruited the first two African-Americans to the program that year, integrating the program.

"In his short time at Mizzou, Broyles left behind a pivotal legacy. . ., but it was indeed Broyles who recruited the team’s first two black players, running backs Mel West and Norris Stevenson from Jefferson City and St. Louis, respectively. ESPN article in 2010. Guess these African American athletes didn't feel Broyles was a racist: http://www.espn.com/espn/wire/_/section/ncf/id/5042289

Flanked by several of the school's finest black athletes, former Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles recalled the man who broke through one of the university's biggest racial barriers.

His name was Jon Richardson, and he was the Razorbacks' first black scholarship football player.

"He was an outstanding running back," said Broyles, who was the football coach when Richardson played at Arkansas from 1970-72. "He and his family certainly, certainly had a lot of decisions to make, but I'll never forget when they told me he was going to be a Razorback. We were so pleased and so proud." . . .

"I thought it was a good event. I thought coach Broyles did a great job in acknowledging the history and the accomplishment of the African-Americans to the University of Arkansas," Delph said. "I don't think the event would have been as meaningful had he not been here."

Broyles also hired the first African American coach at a D1 university in the entire South when he hired Nolan Richardson in 1985:

"Richardson became the first African-American coach at a major university in the South, and the first African-American head coach of a men's program in the Southwest Conference."

But sure, call this fine man a racist. It's just a message board.
