O.B. Bowen
I saw where cancer has returned and OB is now in hospice.
Not a player who has been through USM over the past 40 years that didn't love OB.
Here's hoping his pain is short lived.

When i saw that last night i pulled up the youtube video where USM honored OB at one of the games 2 years ago. Definitely worth the 8-10 minutes to watch the video.

Wonderful video. Forgot that was out there.
Senior hit day, 1980. Funny as s@#t.
OB, what's your job ? "I make sure Dane (McDaniel) wakes up & goes to class"
Went 25 years without seeing him and he did not hesitate in calling my name correctly....immediatlely.

He will be missed. Not everybody can say that.

Quote from Bobby Collins from OB's retirement piece in the Hattiesburg American...not including link to article per Nuggets request.....

“I guarantee any former player, it wouldn’t matter if they played last year or 30 years ago, he would know them if they walked up right now. The players loved him, the coaches loved him and the fans loved him. There’s no doubt that, in terms of Southern Mississippi, he’s a permanent fixture in history.”

Man, I hate to hear that. What a guy! Wish I had a dollar for every beer I bought him at the End Zone, and the number of times a gave him a ride back to Van Hall from the EZ. He was truly one of a kind, and will be missed.

Let's make this thread a tribute to OB! If you have an OB story, please tell it here! I have a couple of classics I will add later.

as a tyke, I remember his eclectic/embracing smile....it warmed the heart of many more worthy than me....

it's ironic and humbling where I now sit....

Not a personal experience but one from a friend:

in 2009 or 10 when OB was wiped out on the sideline and had his leg broken, my friend said you could see where the bone was rubbing against his pant leg (think Joe Theisman type injury). When OB realized what was going on he asked the trainer "does it look bad" and "i'll be ok to stay here for the rest of the game right". From their accounts OB was more upset about missing the rest of the game than he was about his leg was broke.

I'm surprised Eloss-12 let him hang around. He seemed like the kind of worthless pos that would have told him to pound sand. No telling what OB had seen or been a part of through the years. If he were capable I bet he could write a best seller.

RE: O.B. Bowen
A story relayed to me........ (sometime in the mid 80's)

OB and Equipment Manager Wright Waters were to drive the equipment truck up to Little Rock on a late Thursday night for a game with Ark. State on Saturday. Wright had driven thru Jackson and over to Monroe on I20 when he pulled over and let OB drive. Wright instructed OB to wake him up when they got almost into Shreveport as they had to make a turn and head north. Sometime later Wright woke up to massive lights shining in his eyes, and after clearing his eyes and waking up a bit more, he realized that it was way to bright to be Shreveport. He asked OB where the hell they were......OB's reply was "Dallas". Wright starting raising all kinds of hell and finally calmed down and asked OB-"Why didn't you wake me up when we got to Shreveport?" OB's reply - "We ain't got there yet!" Classic OB. He blew right thru Shreveport.............

I was standing at the northeast gate when they brought him out and he was trying to talk them into turning his gurney around and let him finish the game from there.
