What would it look like if the Power leagues formed a single media entity?
Some version of this has been batted around for a while.

Although I don't agree with what some have suggested, that there's going to be some great merger and realignment based on geography in the future, I do think there's merit to the idea that the Power leagues could and probably should be cooperating at the highest levels.

What do I mean? Let me start with realignment...

Let's say in the not too distant future that the leaders of the Power 5 got together and came up with a reasonable division of the Big 12. Now the point of this is not to talk about who goes where, but to talk about the idea of the 4 remaining Power leagues having roughly the same number of schools. First, it's likely that the other Power leagues would need to guarantee spots for the entire Big 12 in order to ensure their cooperation.

Then it would be necessary to ensure that the champion of each league got into the CFP. Win your conference and you're in which means the interest level of the regular season is increased that much more. The conference race would be followed even more closely because of its direct connection with the CFP. As it is, the CCGs are interesting, but could be argued as a hindrance to determining playoff participants rather than a complement.

Then it would necessary to make sure each league had conference semi-finals. Why? Because instead of adding 4 games to the CFP, it might be more profitable for everyone involved to add 8 games to the system. If you have 4 conferences with 2 semi-final games each and 1 CCG each then you've effectively doubled the size of the playoffs while only adding 1 extra game. Pretty efficient.

This is where it gets tricky, but go with me...

If the Power conferences are cooperating to organize a national playoff system that guarantees equal participation from each league then basically the Power leagues are in it together. Why not cooperate at an even higher level? Because at this point, it would behoove everyone to do their best to preserve the system rather than to continue to raid each other.

Once the current media contracts expire, I would propose that the Power leagues go in on one TV contract with shared equal payments for all members.

Now I know some would argue that the B1G and SEC should not give up their inherent advantages in order to help fund other leagues and it's a sound argument. The problem is that 4 leagues negotiating individual contracts will never bring the sort of financial windfall that 1 entity could offer.

Think of this way...the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS each have their own contract. The divisions within these entities don't have their own contracts because some would inherently be more valuable than others and would end up skewing the revenue pie in factor of the distributor(the networks) rather than the supplier(the leagues).

There are multiple media companies vying for the rights of a product wholly owned by one entity. That gives a distinct economic advantage to the supplier. If the supply of one product was owned by 4 or more entities then the ultimate payout is less because the entities are competing with each other to sell their product.

I'm not necessarily talking about the Power leagues giving up every legal designation of independence, but they should seriously consider pooling their rights and selling it as one entity. The networks will have no choice but to deal with this one entity if they are to purchase valued content(the product). This will create a windfall because scarcity will drive up demand.

This could work if....
1. The G5 schools form their own playoff system
2. Affiliate members (ND) have access to their conference's playoff games
2a. Say ND has to beat all 5 ACC opponents and be ranked the 4th highest ACC school or above in the poles to qualify
3. Four power conferences remain

If ND wants to compete for a conference title in football then they need to fully join a conference. What's an extra 3 games?

I think the issue is that you are talking about the P5 schools effectively colluding to control 98% of the market revenue. The fact the P5 isn't maximizing CFB revenue might be a form of legal protection.
