Richmond's mayor, who is African-American, has already said he's in favor of keeping the monuments but adding historical text around the building of the monuments. Makes sense to me.
I disagree. These people fought to preserve the institution of slavery. They have no place in America.

Your Cultural Revolution will have to go deep to erase everyone from American History who had involvement in prolonging/preserving slavery. So deep that American history would pretty much be unrecognizable.

But I suspect that is the actual intent.

I'm not talking about erasing them from history, I'm simply saying we shouldn't have statues honoring them.

Erasing them from history would be a mistake. People need to always remember that these people fought to preserve the institution of slavery.

And I'll say it again. Britain is building a new fancy burial place for King Richard III and he probably murdered two young boys in cold blood.

At some point you have to allow history to be history. You are currently on a rage of destroying and censoring historical objects because they are not politically correct. Like some modern version of chiseling the bad pharaoh's face off of the obelisk. Its stupid and the future will hate you.

If Rome doesn't bust up the statue of Nero we understand that this does not mean that the inhabitants of Rome today support homicidal mother-killing arsonist dictators...its just a freaking historical object.

You are essentially the sculptural version of book-burners.

Aye. I agree.

I didn't care for the Arthur Ashe monument. There are many other black Virginians that deserved it. Like Joseph Ranger of the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War or William Harvey Carney who was the first African-American awarded the Medal of Honor. Those guys should have been put there rather than Ashe. Just my opinion though.

Agreed. Much better ways to do this.

So, there were apparently around 200 protesters at the Lee Monument last night from which could be heard, " "cops and the Klan go hand in hand". Lots of Einsteins out there last night it seems.

While those other gentlemen may be Virginia natives, Arthur Ashe was actually from Richmond. And just because the previous monuments were dedicated to veterans of war does not mean all of them need be. It is MONUMENT Avenue after all.

The inclusion of Arthur Ashe on Monument Avenue is doubly significant given the context adjacent to Confederate statues, since he wasn't allowed to play tennis against white children during the school year due to segregation.

As a native Richmonder, I appreciate that juxtaposition and appreciate his recognition along the city's most famous street.

Really, if people want to find something to complain about with regards to Arthur Ashe, take exception to the indoor track & field complex in Richmond located next to the Diamond that bears his name. That place was a dump when I ran track in high school during the mid 2000s! An athlete such as him deserves much better than that piece of junk, haha.

The people of Richmond are free to choose Pee Wee Herman if they want. The juxtaposition of Ashe seems weird from multiple directions and thats just my outside opinion.

I whole heatedly agree with the inclusion of the Arthur Ashe Monument on Monument Avenue, it's just the design of said monument that's a little strange.

I agree; however, getting folks in Richmond to agree to do anything is next to impossible, at least when it comes to baseball. First the Braves left and now I imagine the Flying Squirrels are going to start to wonder if anything will ever happen. Pretty sure they won't continue to pump money into the Diamond much longer.

I was speaking about how that would encourage more violent protests from the overly offended.

There's a tentative plan in place to replace the Diamond, but the deal probably only will get done because VCU is involved in the process now. People in Richmond typically have pretty strong feelings one way or another when VCU starts throwing money around for more development, but I believe they've been a big boost to the city (especially in the last decade and a half during their big acquisitions and expansions).

RE: Richmond Protests Turn Violent
Today's remarks from the Richmond mayor.

Mayor Stoney: Richmond's Confederate monuments should stay with context added; commission's mission remains the same

snippet:
Quote:Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney on Monday morning reiterated his belief that adding context to the Confederate statues lining Monument Avenue is preferable to removing or relocating them.

"Currently, as I’ve always said, since my remarks earlier on this year, the way those statues stand currently, they’re a shameful representation of the past that we all disagree with," Stoney said. "For me, it’s about telling the complete truth. I don’t think removal of symbols does anything for telling the actual truth or changes the state and culture of racism in this country today."

This man gets it. Heck, if I lived in Richmond, I may have even voted for him. 04-cheers
