Richmond Protests Turn Violent
Quote:One person was arrested after overnight protests in downtown Richmond near VCU and Monument Avenue turned violent.

While 8News was not able to determine who organized the march, groups carrying anti-fascist flags chanted anti-Confederate phrases and demanded that the monuments be removed.

Police said demonstrators marched from the corner of Broad Street and North Laurel Street west toward Lombardy before getting onto Monument Avenue and marching to the Robert E. Lee Monument. The group then turned around and stopped briefly by the JEB Stuart Statue before getting back on Broad Street.

At one point, a protester carrying an anti-fascist flag climbed the JEB Stuart Statue and put the flag on the monument; the flag has since been removed.

Some protesters became aggressive towards journalists and screamed vulgar language to law enforcement.

8News reporter Tracey Smith says she witnessed a man get hit in the head with a bat. There’s no word yet on how many people were injured.

They will NOT succeed in removing the monuments from Monument Ave.

The only one that doesn't belong is the Arthur Ashe monument. Nothing against the guy, but it is very out of place.

Monument Avenue is a National Historic Landmark so, yeah, it'll take more than violence against reporters to get those monuments moved.

State law prohibits the removal of any statue, at least thatcis my understanding of law. I am sure the Virginia Supreme court will uphold that law.

Not to mention the million dollar homes that line that street. The governor isn't going to want to lose all those donations.

What happened in Virginia will only make the removal of confederate symbols faster.

Richmond's mayor, who is African-American, has already said he's in favor of keeping the monuments but adding historical text around the building of the monuments. Makes sense to me.

Aye. I agree.

I didn't care for the Arthur Ashe monument. There are many other black Virginians that deserved it. Like Joseph Ranger of the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War or William Harvey Carney who was the first African-American awarded the Medal of Honor. Those guys should have been put there rather than Ashe. Just my opinion though.

lol, yeah, that Arthur Ash monument looks likes he's about to beat the heck out of some kids. They just put up a statue of Maggie Walker.

I disagree. These people fought to preserve the institution of slavery. They have no place in America.

Well, you don't live in Richmond so.......................

Richmond is a majorly African American city with an African American mayor. At least the folks in Richmond seem level headed and somewhat intelligent regarding history.

Your Cultural Revolution will have to go deep to erase everyone from American History who had involvement in prolonging/preserving slavery. So deep that American history would pretty much be unrecognizable.

But I suspect that is the actual intent.

I'm not talking about erasing them from history, I'm simply saying we shouldn't have statues honoring them.

Not sure about his wife, but he was/is under federal investigation for campaign donations regarding him and some Chinese dude while Mcauliffe was a board member with The Clinton Global Initiative. Not sure if anything ever came of it.

Edit: Maybe you were thinking about the previous governor's wife? We sure know how to pick 'em!!
