If we do lose a conference game before our meeting with you guys, I think it'll be one of the three games prior to FIU because we face North Texas, Rice, and UTEP in the 3 weeks prior to our trip to Florida, and have to face all three of them after their bye weeks. Two of them (UNT and UTEP) will be on the road, and those would be the most likely candidates for upsets. Marshall might be a tough one also if they're improved, but I'd like to think we'll take care of business in our last home game of the season.

Just curious, why do you think losing to FIU is near impossible?

I never said losing to FIU is near impossible, nor did I imply it anywhere in my comment. All my comment was meant to convey was that I think we're more likely to lose one of the 3 games I mentioned above.

No worries, I know our only game was a defensive struggle in the alamadome. Your D was relentless. I think our O will not be as predictable as Ron Turner's O was. Plus I'm hoping y'all are as jinxed in the state of Florida as UTEP 02-13-banana

Hopefully not. lol I'll be in Miami for the game though. Going to all (hopefully 14) of our games this year.

They "shouldn't" have been a problem last year either, but we played Rice after their bye last year and squeaked out a narrow 14-13 win that easily could've been a loss if not for their 2 missed field goals. Mind you, Rice was a mere 3-9 team last year and also had more first downs and more yards than we did in that game.

As for UTEP, they finished 4-8 last year and actually did beat us in overtime at our own Alamodome, also after a bye for them.

We struggle against teams after their bye weeks, and this will be the 2nd straight year we're facing both Rice and UTEP after their byes, so I'm not overlooking anyone.

I don't know if I would call it "struggle" but more of "sleeping". We know both of those games shouldn't have been that close. But a win is a win against Rice and we play them at home this year and they haven't improved. UTEP should have been a win if it wasn't for Jones (their whole offense) which isn't a threat anymore nor do they have anyone at his level. So I would take UNT over the three given we play away, they are slightly improved from last year, they will be rested, and UTSA may be licking their wounds coming off of a battle with USM.

Fair point on UTEP not having their stud RB anymore. Their offense pretty much depended on him, and he's the reason we had such trouble with their TE in the 4th quarter of our game last year, as they kept beating us down the middle over and over again with their TE getting open coming off blocks. We were too focused on stopping Jones.

And I agree on UNT being the bigger worry of the three, but I really think it's more than just a matter of us "sleeping", and feel you're probably not giving the other staff enough credit for their game plan, given that extra week to prepare. And since they're in-state, division rivals, it doesn't seem to me like we have any business sleeping on those games in the first place, which would be a bad reflection on our coaching staff, if true.

UTSA should be good this year but will probably lose to all 3 of the other Texas teams in the conference. You'll still go bowling though.

Unless you think we'll get a win against LA Tech, that would mean we'll go 4-4 in conference, which is worse than last year's 5-3. We'd also likely finish 6-6 overall, unless you think we'll beat Houston or Baylor (which wouldn't make sense if you don't think we'll even win one of our games against Rice, UNT, or UTEP). That would make our record no better than last year. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but barring injuries, we'll be better than last year for sure, so I can't agree with your analysis.

I don't blame you for disagreeing with me. All the preseason prognosticators are saying UTEP will be bad. The mindset of FB fans will follow along with that.

But UTEP's O-line is tagged as the best in C-USA by some, including Phil Steele, for what that's worth. Also UTEP's QB situation is better going into this season than it was last season and Metz improved the latter part of last season. We have two very good TE transfers that will replace Plinke. RB is the big question but coach Kugler has stated that with more speed at WR this year, he is looking to have a more balanced offense. All of that has to come together for the Miners to show improvement on offense, which they sorely need. The defense has solid experience and additional talent with a couple of transfers and should be much better this year.

So I predict that UTSA beats Houston to start the season. That'll be considered an upset but I think it will happen. You will have a big crowd at home with high expectations. I think UTSA will have the bye week disadvantage with the 3 Texas schools and all will be close enough in talent to knock off the Runners. I'm predicting a 7-5 or 8-4 season for UTSA depending on the Rice game. JMO.

I'm personally not worried about our OOC games with Houston and Baylor. If UTSA wins, great, it makes the program look good. If not, no biggie, they were underdogs anyways. I'm looking at the big picture of conference play. If UTSA were to win their first conference championship, now would be a good time to do so. Their schedule this year would set them up for that. I think their main threats are USM, UNT, and La tech. UTSA comes off of a bye week to play USM at home so the Runners will be rested to compete for an important game. Next would be UNT that would also be rested and playing at their home giving them some advantages in that sense. However I don't think even with those advantages UNT will not have enough to knock off UTSAs talent. It will be a close game though. The remaining opponents (with the exception of Latech) will most likely not have enough to handle UTSA. Even with UTEP and Rice having bye weeks, the talent and weapons on UTSA will be too much for them. My prediction is that it come down to the last game against Latech for the West. But Latech has WKU and USM to take care of first, which IMO, I have a feeling it won't happen. But if course injuries will change things up if they happen. Here hoping they play to the expections for this year.

It's a prediction thread right? All it is is a prediction. But your welcome to check out others prediction of the Rice and UTEP games and compare.

Not exact wording but here's one example of someone disproving you. And there are more but I'm sure you are capable to searching.

https://athlonsports.com/college-footbal...-foes-2017

“They do a really good job of running the football. Offensive line is a strength for them. They have two good running backs, the quarterback is athletic and not a straight dropback guy.”

“They're totally different to prepare for because this is such a spread league and suddenly you’ve got a more traditional team and you really have to hit them in the mouth.”

“They did a great job recruiting this year, which isn’t a surprise because recruiting has always been [head coach Frank Wilson's] wheelhouse.”

“They have some good young kids. Honestly, I don't think the talent level was that bad coming into the job. They inherited a good receiver and a strong, physical offensive line and they did a good job developing those guys.”

“They’ll be better this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they win the division
.”

"Weapons and Talents" "the remaining opponents will not have enough to handle UTSA"

What UTSA team is this? Cmon man, UTSA had a losing record last year, lost to UTEP, Tech blew ya'll out, Hell Ryan Higgins chase down one your DB's after an INT03-lmfao

Not saying UTSA wont be better but dont fall into the trap of believing hype when nothing has been proven on the field. Tech fans do that also

Again man, this a prediction thread. This is is exactly what we are supposed to do here. So of course nothing has been proven on the field yet because these are just predictions. Last year is in the past. Yeah we had a losing record but it's in the past and the teams that beat us were the better team (with the exception of UTEP). That's not the case this year. We are returning a lot of players, plus we are towards the top of the conference for recruiting this year, and our schedule allows us not to play the top dogs in the east. It's a reasonable prediction. I think you are misinterpreting my words and thinking that I'm saying that we are elite. I'm not saying that, I'm just saying based off scouting, players, and predictions from experts, Latech, UTSA, USM, and UNT will most likely be the top four teams of the West. Meaning the remainder of the teams should get beat by these four "on paper".
