FORMER ROCKET ASST COACH AND OAKLAND U HEAD COACH NEARLY DIES
Just saw this article after reading about a neighbor down the street being killed by a hippo on an African filming safari. Saw a quick blurb about it on Sports Center on the crawler. Didn't catch all of it and didn't see the name at that time.

Saw the hippo thing- no details. They are not to be messed with I guess. Nor sepsis.

the link is at the bottom of the article on Coach Kampe. The lady died.
Good health to Coach Kampe. Kidney stone, who would have thought.

Yes - the woman died in her son's arms. I had read that hippo's were the deadliest mammal in the world, but the listing you provided shows a lot more deaths coming from rabid dogs. Must be because the person dies from the rabies and not the actual dog attack. The fact that crocodiles kill 1,000 humans a year is pretty significant as well. Just goes to show how far down the food chain a human is when they venture out into the wild. It's one reason I quit scuba diving. Had a sea lion go zipping past me in Cabo and I nearly swallowed the regulator. I thought it was a great white - and that was enough of that....

The hippo reference I believe is to Africa. Lots of crocs in the world. Give that scuba thing another shot. Avoid African rivers.

Hippos kill more in Africa than any mammal. And poor little Fiona down in Cincinnati just couldn't be cuter.

Found out last night the woman that was killed lived about a mile down the road from me. Hard to comprehend something like that could happen, but I suppose you are not dealing with the same safety precautions on those safaris as you might expect - and you probably wouldn't even know how dangerous it could be.

Hippos are the most dangerous animals in the world due to them being so territorial.

Those big ol teeth might have something to do with it also. I was in a motor boat with others, we saw the wake a good 100 meters away. Got that feeling in the loins and squeezed the biscuits. The guy operating the boat just turned that sucker right around. No, "let's stay here and look at the Hippo." No, "oh this is great." vroom. No one objected.
Hippos and snakes. Nothing I saw sends an African screaming faster than just the sight. We'd just look at the snake and say, "look, a snake." I saw a whole room of 50 clear in seconds. They'd look at us like we were nuts and we'd look at them like, there's something we must not know.
Dengue is bad, particularly the little ones. Seeing someone having a malaria attack is horror show freaky. Fevers, shakes and sweats. Mosquitos and flees make me paranoid. Bit once and I'll hear or feel them all day.

You were in Africa? Not on my list of places to visit - too many ways to die over there and of course....no golf courses worth the visit.
I saw a youtube video of some idiot in a boat in Africa that was waiting on that wake to get closer, then had a hard time getting the motor started up to take off. I'm guessing that hippo that was submerged was less than 15 feet away before he got going to outrun it. ha ha, everyone laughing at their close encounter afterward. Those are the idiots I don't want to encounter over there. I'll see if I can find that video and post it. Will give you chills.
I don't think this is the one I'm thinking of - but you get the idea.

Kampe's experience pretty much sums up, infection happens anywhere. Better to concentrate on the ways to live. And what do you really need to play golf? At college we used a cup, a shared putter and a ball. Throw the cup along sunbathing row. putt, putt, score!
Africa's one of those few places, you can say you've been there and people think you've seen it all. I think in most minds, there's Africa, then there's Egypt or maybe S. Africa but not so much since Mandela's been gone. Twice life put me with opportunity to see savanna, Ngorgoram and twice life got in the way. Had a posting near the "Gorillas of the Mist," and the war broke before I left stateside. Unimaginable tragedy. So, I've seen little of what most think of when they think "Africa" but I wouldn't really change my bit for that bit. Well, most of it. Maybe I need to book a safari, lol.
