Not accurate, IMO. Darren Rovell, a sports biz analyst, tracks the buy games. Here are the payouts from Week 1 last season (2016):

Darren Rovell has reported the following payouts for this weekend’s games:

Florida paying UMass $1.25 million
Tennessee paying App State $1.15 million
Iowa paying Miami (OH) $1 million
UNLV paying Jackson State $600,000
Texas Tech paying Stephen F. Austin $450,000
Oregon paying UC-Davis $500,000
Oklahoma State paying Southeastern LA $385,000
Nevada paying Cal Poly $375,000
Duke paying NC Central $350,000
Maryland paying Howard $350,000

So, getting the $750K is fine, and like those of you who support the Purdue game say, we will have a good chance to win the game.

But the UMass - Auburn $1.9M payment is the outlier. Memphis wouldn't get the $1.9M that UMass gets. Auburn is paying for an easy win - as Ole Miss would attest, we are not that. Also, Auburn is richer than Purdue, and guarantee opponents know this. Michigan and Florida and Bama and Auburn have to pay more. Last, games late in the season cost more than Week 1 or 2 games - Umass-Auburn is in November.

For those of you supporting the Memphis-Purdue buy game, are names like UMass, App State, Jackson St., Stephen F. Austin, UC-Davis, SE LA, Cal Poly, NC Central and Howard the types of schools that Memphis football wants to be compared to?

Who cares? It's a P5 game where we have a great chance to come up with a win. I have no problem with it.

We usually play a complete dud or two out of conference each year. This year we play Southern Illinois. I'd rather play a team like Purdue than Missouri State, Austin Peay, UT Chatt, or SEMO.

It's exposure. Not Michigan or Ohio State exposure for sure, but at least it'll show up in the USA Today box score.

You guys will gripe about anything.

Not true for me, I'm not a griper, if "griper" is even a word. Like you, not an anti-Tubby guy, I say give him time.

That being said, Memphis football shouldn't be doing buy games. Think Coach Norvell likes it? When we are throwing $3 million at Norvell this year or next, trying to get him to stay, Bowen will no doubt be talking about our aspirations to be big time. Big time schools don't do buy games.

If Ole Miss or UT or Miss State or Louisville or even Houston or Cincy scheduled a buy game, we would rightly make fun of them.

We aren't Ole Miss, MSU, or Louisville. They are getting huge P5 checks. Weren't not even Houston or Cincy.

Don't get me wrong, we're on the right track. If we want to be recognized, we need to play more P5 teams.

It's a winnable game. We have no idea how either team will be in 2020, but just based on the past, we have a great chance to beat a Big 10 team at their home.

We all want to get out of the AAC. That's the goal. We've scheduled some home and homes with some pretty decent schools. I have no problem with a buy game or two.

Now two buy games? Please tell me it will only be this one.

We were ranked 17th two seasons ago. 37th most votes in this year's preseason poll. Gonna open a can of whoop-ass on UCLA in a month and 4 days. Teams like this do not do buy games.

Anyway, agree to disagree, which is fine. Go Tigers!

I trust the guys that got us here. We're still on the outside looking in. We don't get the funding or exposure of the P5 schools. So I don't have a problem with it. The overriding goal is to win (like Louisville) and move up. Not sure it'll ever happen, but it may if we win big.

Anyway, I agree about UCLA. Go Tigers!

With basketball revenues now in the dumper... football has got to start carrying its weight. I guess buy games are our future.

Now I'm getting depressed. Buy games? Plural? This needs to be a one off. Got caught without a decent OOC opponent only 3 years out, beggars can't be choosers . . .
This can't start a trend, IMO.

maybe they will be better by then, but just checked and single game tickets are widely available from the ticket site and not that expensive.

The people that think this is a negative are just uninformed.

First, this payout is almost half of what our current TV contract is.
Second, it is almost as high as most of the bowls the AAC is contracted to receive.
Third, it's a high chance victory against a P5 opponent.
Fourth, we are free for 7 home games as well as this buy game.

Last, and most importantly, the Big 10 has implemented a P5 scheduling in which they don't allow FCS games or lower tiered G5 games. The non-P5 teams on the approved list are Notre Dame and BYU. This puts us into some lofty company.

Would love to go back and see how many people that are complaining about this wanted us to get killed by Ohio State for $1 million just a couple of years ago!?!!

If you want a buy game, how about you go to someone who isn't the single poorest P5 program?

Get double that with a team we might actually lose to.

So much wrong here, and yet you lecture those who disagree with you as being uninformed.

We lose money on bowl games, and that's ok, it's a reward for our players, their families, fans, our band and cheerleaders. Our conference commits schools to buying a certain amount of tickets, which we don't sell out. Add the cost of travel and hotel for band and cheerleaders, and we lose money. So bowl games should have nothing to do either way with us agreeing to a travel buy game.

Our OOC non-conference games in '20 are Arkansas St. and Texas San-Antonio. Does that get Tiger fans excited? Don't think so. Next year, our OOC home slate is Mercer, Ga State and So Alabama. Yikes.

We need to insist on home-and-homes, or we get OOC home schedules like these. We have good OOC home games in '19 (Ole Miss), '21 (Miss. State), and '23 (Missouri), but other than that the OOC home games are very weak. Predict a lot of $5 Kroger games in our future.

Re the Big 10 policy, do you think Notre Dame and BYU would ever agree to a road buy game for the privilege of playing a lower tier Big 10 opponent? Of course not.

I would much rather get a bigger paycheck for the opportunity to show, say, Wisconsin what's what than some scrub like Purdue.

RE: Buy game at Purdue?
Some of y'all are unreal. We're not a P5 program. As much as the AAC wants to promote itself as a P6 conference...it isn't going to happen. We might be able to squeeze some money out of tv networks with that ploy....maybe not.
I think if a P5 school like Purdue is dumb enough to pay us to come up there and beat their azzes...possibly on tv (if we hire a good Mike Norvell replacement that is), then I am all for it.
Some of y'all are thinking "there's no recruiting in Indiana". The area also includes Kentucky...so it widens the recruiting area from Tennessee through Kentucky, up to Indiana. Gets our foot in the doors anyway.
I'd hope the new coaching staff would want to take advantage of that.
