Random stat du jour...

Dukes enter the 2017 on a streak of 6 straight games where we have given up 7 pts or less at halftime.

Also, during this same 6-game streak, the Dukes only experienced ONE 5 1/2 minute stretch in a game where we were behind - that was the home playoff game against UNH where they scored to go ahead 7-0 on their 2nd possession off a short field gift from a JMU thrown INT. Dukes of course regained the lead late in the 1Q and never looked back.

Sort of a streak-within-the-12-game-winning-streak. When the Dukes hold opposing teams to 7 pts by halftime, we will bury our opponent and our starters will be cheering from the sidelines in the 2nd half.

That cheering from the sidelines dang near bit us against UNH during the season.

RE: is it possible that......
I do believe this year's D will be better than anything we've had.... since..... I don't know, since before Mickey? is that blasphemy? hard to compare, since our offenses have always been so different, which really helps the defense shorten the game.

not sure the offense can quite match up with last year's unit. let me see how the OL comes along first. i'm not going to just assume 3 guys with very little experience are going to come in and do what 3 experienced seniors did.

to answer the OP's question: yes, I believe the defense will be superior to the offense. they're stacked at almost every position (safety is a little thin once you get past the starters).

I'm sure BDK will come up with some facts disproving this, but I think the best defense off the top of my head was 2004.

The defense that jumps out at me as being the toughest, was the year we beat Tech (2010). Gave up 162 points all season. 14.7 pts per game. Just had no offensive support and our D got worn down every 4th quarter by being on the field so long. Was a wasted season for an exceptional unit.

Yep. 2010 was certainly one of the best JMU defenses ever.

-Purzycki's 6 seasons 1985-1990 looks like they all had good defenses.
-Of JMU's 7 HCs, all the top 15 defenses but 1 in ppg yielded have been Purzycki & MM.
-Wood & Withers only had 6 seasons between them, but 4 of the 5 worst defenses.

Last year really wasn't that good through the 1st 9 games. Then the last 6 games was just lights out..Only 60 points yielded in the playoffs (only 46 to the starters)..Of JMU's 13 playoff teams, last year's was only one of 2 that yielded less ppg in the playoffs than the regular season, and it was far less.

Ranking the JMU defenses in 37 seasons of I-AA from best to worse in terms of point per game yielded during the REGULAR season.

The stats pretty much do back it up despite of couple of seasons of offensive ineptitude. 2010 was an excellent defense. Too bad the offense sucked. 2004-2006, 2008 & 2009 were were very good defenses. 2007 & 2012 were decent. All those years were sandwiched between MM's 2 worst defenses 2003 & 2013.

but again, stats don't tell the whole story. the offenses we had in the MM era had fewer explosive plays, especially in the passing game, as compared to this team. besides that, we went no huddle way less (did we ever, outside of obvious 2 minute drills?). apples and oranges. those defenses had a major advantage with the style of offense we played. eyeball test only, i'll take the 2016 defense and most likely the 2017 defense right up there with the absolute best of this decade. tackling ability, understanding gap assignments, toughness, flying to the football, unselfish play. it's not always about stats. you can just see it.

But like a couple of people already mentioned earlier with 2010, a couple of those defenses (2009-2010) had a major disadvantage because JMU didn't have an offense with a pulse. Had constant 3 and outs or turnovers, putting the defense right back on the field over and over. Would be worn down by the latter part of the game. And yet in 2010 the defense yielded only 14.7 points per game.

If you're talking the ENTIRE season I wouldn't put 2016 up there with the best going back to 2004 since wasn't very good for the 1st 9 games. But if you're talking the last 6 games I would- was like 2 different defenses within the same season.

I hope you're right on 2017. As has been pointed out by others, JMU appears stacked at DE, LB, and corner, and can deal with a few injuries during the season. But thin at safety and maybe DT, at least on the experience side, where injuries could be a real problem..

Agreed, but I would add a 4th. DT seems to be one of the positions guys get knicked up a lot at, and it best to have at least 3, if not 4, bodies to rotate in there.

Agreed. And with an EZU long term season ticket holder brother, I can tell you they're a tad nervy about this one. Crap season a year ago, open against a (largely) intact FCS Nat'l C-Ship team that has won these games prior, then facing WVu and VippySue?!?

0-3 is a real possibility and basically season over.

So, who's starting the thread on who's going? Where we sitting (Standing), and the pre-game?

absolutely agree on all of this. you're right, if you take the year as a whole, 2016 is clearly not the best. i was just thinking of the finished product. i'm more worried about a safety injury than a DT injury, but you're right on the experience thing. I guess I know for sure that we at least have talent in our DT rotation, I have absolutely no idea what we have behind our starting safeties.
