Now, you could make the case that a $1.3 million game in Starkville + H/H is better than a straight up H/H with no money.

Our deal is absolutely better, imo. Its in fact a h/h, with the addition of a payout game a few years prior. Ill take the money and an opportunity to beat them in front of their home crowd any time. Get enough of these games and maybe we can afford to pay a HC enough to keep him around a while if we need to.

Agreed with our deal is better. It does suck that we'll only have 5 home games but at the same time we've got to play 12 games so why not play at State for a good payday instead of playing at BYU or Illinois or some other school which will have little to no interest.

Wow...that is our problem here at USM, a lot of our fans do actually think we got a better deal than Troy. That is the reason we will never ever be any better than we are now..we think small time here...

Nah, our problem is pride doesn't pay the bills, and even a Top 25 team doesn't sell the place out because people are more concerned with who's on the visitor's sideline than the home one.

...which is all the more reason to take State at home whenever or however they agree to it.

Small time is not keeping up with your decreasingly relevant peers' COA allowances, freaking UAB having a better inclimate weather practice facility, and having the lowest paid coaches in your conference. Unless you have 500 grand and a P5 home opponent in your pocket, you're just going to have to hold your nose & swallow these contracts like they're Aunt Bee's Kerosene Cucumbers.

Your opinion on that play, while unimaginative and exemplary of the worst sort of "Monday morning quarterbacking," is still more reasonable than the opinions you've shared in this thread.

How are we supposed to become less "small time?" By thumbing our nose at SEC home games because they won't negotiate with us as if we were their equals?

Being "big time" is not a matter of "wish it, want it, do it." It something that takes decades of carefully executed strategy. I see signs of that starting to happen at USM. Shaking down Liberty in exchange for a home-and-home was a smart move. Picking up Shannon Dawson on the cheap was a smart move. Picking up Hop on the cheap might even turn out to be brilliant.

Our arrangement with State- while it does amount to admitting the obvious, i.e. we're not their equal- was a very smart move. As someone else pointed out, it's basically a money game followed by a home-and-home with an SEC school. The former is something we're going to need to start doing again, if we ever want a new basketball arena or an indoor practice facility. The latter sort of arrangement is manna from heaven, an opportunity to fill up our stadium and maybe score an upset.

You keep it up with your glib, stuck-in-2012 answers, though. Just like that HB pass, you have no real ideas about what we actually should be doing. I'm glad our AD doesn't think like you; if he did, the relevant video would be this one:
