MSU perspective

therein lies the rub....nothing new here

Quote:The only program which will truly benefit from this series is the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. They will get a nice pay day for taking two road games against the Bulldogs and will have a shot, albeit a long one, to make a statement with a win against an SEC team.

For the Bulldogs, the best case scenario is you thump the Golden Eagles when the games take place but do nothing to change the perception of what kind of team you have. Southern Miss was a really good team in 2015, but when Mississippi State struggled to put them away to open the season, many thought the Bulldogs weren’t that great of a team because of it. You’re also giving recruits a chance to reconsider whether or not Southern Miss is a viable option for them should they do the improbable and beat the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State needs to play Group of 5 teams every year, and more likely than not, twice each season. In an effort to stay fiscally responsible, the Bulldogs usually do a 2-for-1 to keep from having to pay so much money to get these games scheduled.

Scheduling a Group of 5 team is not an issue. The issue is choosing to play one in-state that has a huge benefit to that team and almost none to Mississippi State. When these games take place, it’ll be fun for fans. But there isn’t any way to make a statement for Mississippi State in these games while Southern Miss can. And that’s the real problem with keeping this series going.

The worst part of a sh*tty 2 for 1 deal with the pups is that 2 games are in Starkville, the armpit of the state.

not sure what rub (for USM) you're talking about.

even this guy admits its a good deal for USM.

MSU (and UM) will always have the lose/lose perspective, bc it generally is (for them). Of course, as long as they are beating USM, they can get a small win out of it for MS recruiting. Shows the recruits that USM is indeed, "baby brother".

Not all State fans are opposed to this deal. Some are, yeah, but not all. We knew some were not going to happy with it. That's fine.

As for recruiting, it's seems unlikely that we'd steal anyone even if we win. The gap between the two programs is just so massive that even a USM win wouldn't sway anyone from choosing to play in CUSA over the SEC.

Plenty of upside to us playing these games though. We're getting a hefty payday for the 2019 game and playing State increases our exposure/visibility throughout Mississippi. People will be forced to give a damn about Southern Miss for a few weeks over the next several years. That's a win.

Win just 1 game and we can talk infinite amounts of **** to these people. A W vs State would also help our reputation/perception tremendously across the state. Right now, we're on par with Delta State when you get outside the Pine Belt.

And FWIW, I'd have to say Clarksdale is the armpit of Mississippi, not Starkvegas. They're in the running though.

It may lower State's perception, the only thing that will improve Southern's stature is somehow fleeing SUNWACUSA.

Nah, let Starkville have "armpit." There's a better bodily analogy for Clarksdale. If you were giving the state a prostate exam, you'd stick your finger up Coahoma County.

thank the good goodies MEM wasn't too far up the road for late night festivities.....

what a shitehole that place is....

OK, so I was for the 2-1 (guarantee + H/H, I know....) but Troy just signed a home/home with State. I guess they are above us now.

http://troytrojans.com/news/2017/8/23/tr...ement.aspx

Now, you could make the case that a $1.3 million game in Starkville + H/H is better than a straight up H/H with no money.

Our deal is absolutely better, imo. Its in fact a h/h, with the addition of a payout game a few years prior. Ill take the money and an opportunity to beat them in front of their home crowd any time. Get enough of these games and maybe we can afford to pay a HC enough to keep him around a while if we need to.
