It's actually contracted up as a pay game (2019) and a 1-1 series. No word yet on how much for the Pay game. I doubt it's as much as Bama is paying us the same year (close to $2m). I don't like the pay game in 2019, as we also have Troy and Bama road games, with an in-sate FCS team at home. 5 home games is not cool. Hopefully we can move either the Troy or Bama game to another season and get a decent home game to fill the spot.

I read somewhere, Twitter maybe, that the Troy game in 2019 was being moved to another year which "should" mean that we will add another home game that year to give us 6. I'm thinking at Troy in 2020 as our only road game that year is Auburn with a home game vs South Alabama already.

AndreWhere touched at it a little bit, but State alums are the kinda people that think they're blue collar because they drive a $50,000 truck and live in the Jackson suburbs.

Your stereotypical MSU fan is some middle aged suburban engineer that goes to a Rankin County megachurch then comes home and logs on Ashley Madison after getting back from Sunday lunch at Newk's or Beagle Bagel.

MSU fans are typically more hostile toward USM than OM fans. OM has a lot of OOS alums compared to State and a lot of those in-state people are from the Memphis suburbs which is not really Mississippi. More MSU fans from Central and South MS means they're exposed to USM more than OM fans.

Just an insufferable group of human beings. I have many friends with OM ties that I consider good people. I can say that I don't really know a single State person that is worth a damn.

speaking for myself, they're both simply the sisters to the north....

whether we won or lost, most of the games we've played against them in my lifetime (which is pretty deep now) have been a blast from this fan's perspective....

I have zero problem with a 2/1 vs. moo-who or ole pissy 03-wink

This made me lol as it could of come straight from hubby's mouth only the opposite. Of course, he was born and raised in Memphis so there's the difference. My limited interactions tend to fall in line with the stereotypes...OM entitled snob and MSU good ole boy.

I always grew up with an equal disdain for both, simply for the fact that they wouldn't play us.

After this series is concluded, USM/MSU will have played 5 games in 11 years. They are also coming here for a 3 game baseball series to open up the season next year, something Ole Miss would never do.

So, I've come around some on MSU, for the simple fact that they will play us, but OM can continue to rot.

Per Hattiesburg American article USM will receive $1.2 million for the 2019 game at State. Also, if either team backs out of the 2023 or 2024 games the buyout is $1 million per game

Here's a breakdown of USM's SEC paydays the next few years and OOC games

2017
@Tennessee - $850k -----based off the 2018 and beyond paydays you can tell this was scheduled before the SEC TV contract made them richer)
Kentucky (return game from 2016. USM got $300k playing there but pays UK nothing for coming here)
@UL Monroe (1st game of a home and home.....game at USM next year)
Southern University (FCS)

2018
@Auburn - $1.7 mil
@Appalachian St (return game from 2013 season in Hattiesburg)
Jackson St (FCS)
UL Monroe (return game from 2017 game in Monroe)

2019
@Alabama - $1.85 mil
@Miss St - $1.2 mil
@Troy (return game from 2016 game in Hattiesburg)
Alcorn St (FCS)

2020
@Auburn - $1.85 mil
South Alabama (1st game of a home and home....2021 at USA)

The article also confirmed that the 2019 Troy game was moved to another weekend but would still be in 2019 meaning only 5 home games unless USM and Troy can work something out to move it to 2020.

2019 game is a guarantee 1.2 million dollar payout to USM. Then if either team buy's out of the 1-1 in 2023 or 2024 it will cost them $1 million.

Before everyone jumps on the "its a good deal" bandwagon, do we know what it will cost Mississippi State to buy out of the return game to Hattiesburg?

I don't like the fact that Miss State doesn't play in Hattiesburg until the 3rd game in this series. Methinks MSU will likely buy this last game out and replace it with another home game in front of 60K. The only way this doesn't happen is if Miss St is facing a very steep financial penalty for buying out game #3.

Okay. THERE it is. Speaking financially, why wouldn't MSU just "buy out" the 3rd game in this series with USM and never go to Hattiesburg? They could easily schedule another home game in Starkville and earn at least $2.4M ($40 X 60K), not including concessions, parking, tailgate fees, etc...

Did the USM AD even think this through? Don't get me wrong, USM will still benefit from the early buyout by earning the $1M buyout fee. that should be enough for USM to pay a decent, lower level opponent to come to Hattiesburg. But USM fans shouldn't count on seeing MSU in Hattiesburg in 2024. 07-coffee3

Well, if they do that, they end up paying us a lot more than anyone else has paid us for visiting them, which wouldn't be too smart.

Did you ever consider that maybe playing in Hattiesburg once in a while might be a good thing? They've got fans down there. They've got recruits down there. They've got players from the area. It's not like USM is located in some kind of no man's land where no one would ever go unless the town bribed them. 03-lmfao

So you think it would still be worth it for Miss St to lose the net $1 million bucks or so (after paying another opponent to come to Starkville) just so they can play in Hattiesburg? Okay. 01-wingedeagle

Played in Hattiesburg recently. Why are you adamant State won't play this time?? Buyouts aren't that common.

Good question. Just putting the game in Hattiesburg on the back-end of the 3-game series makes me question MSU's motives. I guess I just don't trust MSU with the financial incentives being what they are.

Well, they can buy us out if they want. No skin off my back, really. We get $1,000,000 for doing absolutely nothing, from people we hate? And this is after giving us two shots to beat them, which we relish, regardless of venue? And we get to host a home game, and make > $500,000 on our own? Not the worst thing that ever happened to USM.

That said, you're making a lot of assumptions. You're assuming that 60,000 people will just be willing to fork over $40 or whatever just because MSU decided to have one more home game. That may or may not be reasonable, depending on how they're doing in 2000-whatever. I can tell you I've seen some pretty poorly-attended State games, and State fans are notorious tightwads. Don't think they're big concession stand consumers. It's more of a popcorn-in-the-wife's-purse scene up there.

Considering Tennessee is "only" paying USM $850k when the following 2 years we are getting paid double that by Alabama and Auburn makes you wonder how much "buy" games will be in 6-8 years.

Well, they can buy us out if they want. No skin off my back, really. We get $1,000,000 for doing absolutely nothing, from people we hate? And this is after giving us two shots to beat them, which we relish, regardless of venue.

True. I'm hearing the average cost of an SEC game these days is more around $70 per ticket rather than $40. And it's likely to be much more by the year 2024. But for the sake of a fair argument, I used only $40 as the standard. I also didn't include parking revenue, concessions, additional advertising/sponsorship monies and additional TV revenue that might be forthcoming as a result of MSU having another home game.

So bottom line, I think my $40 average per head (for quick math only) is a very fair and reasonable approach to make the point.

For me, it's State. Easy.

Damn. You must live a cold, lonely, existence. I don't believe I've ever seen an entire fan base painted with such a broad brush. You've got issues. 07-coffee3

Not any different than State fans calling USM alums a bunch of Coast trash commuters that all root for LSU or Bama.

Stereotypes are fun. Generally a little bit of truth to all of them. Yes, there are some State alums that are like what I described, but not all. Just like there are some Coast trash USM alums that root for Bama and LSU. Some people like that but certainly not all.

And you will learn to hate their fans. Lurk on Elite Dawgs or Six Pack Speak the week leading up to your game in Ruston.

Seems to me you hit a bit close to home for HogDawg's taste.

I've known a lot of State fans, and it's true... not all of them are metal building church members with Lee jeans, no personality, and anal retentive personalities. I've known exactly one who wasn't like that.
