And he secured it, rather than trying to run with it... smart.

Sorry to see Covington going out for the year. Seemed like he was having a good season.

RE: Rice in the NFL (2017 edition)
MNF tonight ... Broncos @Chiefs

Jordan Taylor caught his first catch (for a gain of 8 yards) with 25 seconds left in the game, which was won by the Chiefs, 29-19. He was targeted three times. On one, he had the short position of his defender and Siemian threw it very high. Taylor, surely expecting a lower ball, made a last-second awkward leap, which was a few inches short of the ball ... which was then intercepted by the DB behind him.

(If anyone was keeping the stats, this game might well have set a record for combined bad passes thrown by both teams' QBs.)

I didn't see Phillip Gaines on the field, but could easily have missed him. He was not listed in the box score.

The Chiefs activated from IR today CB Steve Nelson, who "likely take the nickel/slot cornerback spot from Phillip Gaines, who has struggled this season."

Nelson made 4 tackles and defended one pass play.

Ugh, OT because it's not Rice related, but Deshaun Watson tore his ACL in practice. That stinks for him and the Texans.

Luke Willson with his 3rd TD of the season just now (and a neat celebration in the endzone where I guess he and his teammates were acting like the Pied Piper?). Seattle trails 10-8 though since its kicker has missed 3 field goals.

Vance McDonald caught his first TD as a Steeler today, and Chris Boswell kicked the game-winning FG as time expired to give Pittsburgh a 20-17 win at Indianapolis. I'm glad Boswell came through in the clutch as he had a rough game otherwise, with a blocked extra-point, and a missed FG off the goal post earlier in the 4th quarter.

Not disputing re the missed FG, but if I recall Hambone correctly, a blocked XP is rarely the fault of the kicker.

The James Casey of the Broncos. In addition to his TE/FB play, wasn't Casey also an emergency long-snapper and emergency QB for a few games?

Bryce Callahan of the Bears scored on a trick 59 yard punt return against the Vikings. Minnesota leads Chicago 16-7 late in the 3rd quarter.

Just saw a tweet that Larry Izzo is out as special teams coach for the Texans. Not surprising since special teams have been awful. Probably not helped by the piss poor job the team has done with mid round draft picks in the last decade.

Combination - Texans Special teams have been so sloppy, its like watching Rice all over again.

That said, Rick Smith somehow still has his job, so go figure.

He'd be a great, local hire by Bloomgren.

Why? I mean, Izzo was awesome at New England as a player, and was part of a staff of good Special teams for NYG, but his tenure at the Texans was atrocious.

I'm not opposed to hiring him (if Bloomgren wanted to) but not sure why the hire would be termed great.

I've always thought it would be an interesting recruiting tactic, when other teams start saying, "You don't want to go to Rice, you can't get to the NFL playing at Rice," (and they do say that), for Izzo to invite them over to see his Super Bowl ring collection.

I'm torn. Texans special teams was their own type of dumpster fire this year, but I agree that he would be great for recruiting.

Special teams performance is not usually the result of the special teams coordinator, but more how much emphasis the head coach, and in the NFL the personnel department, puts on special teams. Under George Allen, Redskins made special teams a priority in picking reserves to put on the roster. Cowboys didn't, at least not to such an extent. Therefore Redskins' special teams usually outperformed Cowboys' when they met.

Look at Rice under Bailiff. We want through several special teams coordinators (LaFavers, Naivar, Patterson, that I know of) and special teams were never really good, even when we had Martens and Boz. That's got to be attributable to the head coach, at least in large part. How much time does he allot to special teams in practice? What is his policy on regulars playing on special teams? Those are things that are beyond the coordinator's control, but greatly affect special teams performance.
