I'd like to give Sirk the nod. Coach Mo says he's 100% healthy. I remember how good he was for Duke. He has physical ability and the right mental makeup to be a poised leader of the team. Great duel threat and an All-ACC caliber player.
Anybody that brings Duke back to prominence and wins MVP of their 1st bowl victory since '61 can't be bad.
According to his Duke bio he:
Played in and started 12 games ... missed the Pittsburgh game due to injury ... first team CoSIDA Academic All-District III honoree ... Academic All-ACC selection ... following Duke’s win over Virginia Tech, earned ACC Offensive Back of the Week, Manning Award Star of the Week and Davey O’Brien Award “Great 8” Performer of the Week honors ... co-MVP of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl ... He completed 251-of-427 (.588) pass attempts for 2,625 yards with 16 TDs and eight INTs ... recorded a pass efficiency rating of 119.04 ... rushed 163 times for 803 yards (4.93) and eight TDs ... amassed 3,428 total offensive yards to register the second-highest single-season total in Duke history.
That's a lot better pedigree than Phillip Nelson had coming in last year (nothing against Nelson because when healthy he was a quality QB).

RE: ECU to name starting QB in less than a fortnight.
Looking at Sirk hightlights video, Duke vs Miami 2015
For 3 1/2 quarters, Sirk threw a lot of short yardage passes short of the 1st down, and overthrown and incomplete passes. He was most dangerous running. Late in the 4th when Duke was 19 points down he began lighting it up down the field to pull ahead. At 23, Sirk brings maturity (for college) and winning experience. Not sure if his body can play an entire season like this after 3 Achilles tendon injuries.
I've heard reports Minshew may be getting more reps in practice, so I would not be surprised if he gets the nod.

Sirk may be a red zone QB for us. I liked the way Minshew threw the ball and expect better things this year.

I'm pretty sure he can win 3 games again this year and still have a job.
It would take a monumental crapping of the bed with 2 or less wins and getting smoked in a lot of games for Compher to fire Coach Mo. It would also take the deep pocketed PC members who wanted Ruff gone on board to pay for the buyout and do another coaching search.
I don't see that happening and I think we are trending in the right direction. Talent on the team is higher than it has been in quite some time so it is up to the Coaches to get these kids winning. If the only thing we did was reverse our turnover ratio and Red Zone efficiency from last year we will have a decent season.

This is why I think we'll go bowling. It's hard to turn the ball over as much as we did last year.
"(The battle's) ongoing. We're going to be able to make a decision with some of the stuff that we're seeing and continuing to grow to see," Montgomery said Sunday night. "It's going to be tough. But I think, the way that we set it up before and being able to be clear-minded and evaluate it, it's good for me to be able to sit back in the scrimmage and watch the operation, the field generalship, the response from the guys on the sidelines and how they communicate. All that stuff is good. It's a good battle going on right now still though. I can't tell you who it's going to be at this point in time. But we'll be able to make the decision, I feel pretty confident about that."
Minshew and Sirk each split reps with the first and second team during the scrimmage. Sirk, a graduate transfer from Duke, had the lone turnover among the two signal-callers, tossing a pick to Jordan Williams. He finished the scrimmage 9-of-14 for 118 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Minshew went 11-of-17 for 181 yards and one score.

I think it will depend a lot on whether Sirk runs around in the second scrimmage.
RE: ECU to name starting QB in less than a fortnight.
I've noticed coach Mo praising Howe at RB a couple of times.
I know a lot of fans are focused on Clemson transfer Tyshon Dye and Tennessee transfer Derrell Scott, but Howe had offers from 15 P6 schools (Cincy, Colorado, Duke, GT, Louisville, Maryland, Miss St, UNC, Temple, USF, Utah, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Wisconsin) and could be a breakout star this year.

Montgomery has consistently said Dye and Scott are one and two right now though

I don't know why he didn't redshirt last year. Must have really needed his play on special teams as bad as they were early in the season.

Some have already made their assumptions. Sean Levy did a feature on 247 ranking the QBs that VT faces this year. Sirk is #3 lol.

Looks like Minshew might win out. He's had better stats (more yards, better completion %, less turnovers) & Sirk was at least slightly injured today going for loose ball).
