2017 ODU Football Season Summer Practice Discussion
Here we go ! Looks QB and LB will be the biggest ?s as we sort things out. I hope the QB that wins out is a dual threat type QB. We need depth at LB so hopefully some of the underclassman have been working really hard to make an impact.

As far as I know both were continued and thus both sill suspended indefinitely. The only QB we have on the roster that is not super mobile is Williams. That's not to say he's a statue but at 6-4 he's the least mobile.
RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Summer Practice Discussion
I think its a wait and see with Derek Wilder due to his next court date coming next month after the first game. If charges get reduced or drop they'll call it 1-3 game suspension I betcha.

What does size have to do with mobility? Has anyone seen this kid run or move? Not sure I get your correlation.

Yeah Cam Newton is a pretty big feller and I would say he's pretty mobile

Rewatching the Hudl video. Steven Williams Jr. is perhaps the most mobile QB we have ever had. At least in the Heinicke and Demarco mold.
I'm not sure I would say that, however I think his size gives him advantages that those two QB's did not have and will serve him well at the FBS level. He is certainly able to scramble out of trouble in those highlights. His shear bulk and strength makes him look more like a TJ Barrett 6-3 220 lbs. Mr. Williams 6-4 200 lbs reacts quickly and uses his size to strong arm needed yardage in that film. Again I think he will be the future of the program if it pans out as intended. There will be strong competition this year at the QB level and will, really force the cream to come to the top. Last year it was a given Washington was going to be the starter. This year truly we have 4 candidates that all bring assets and different skills. Drayton Arnold 5-11 190 lbs RFr. Jordan Hoy 6-1 195 lbs, So., Blake LaRussa 5-10 185 lbs So. and Steven Williams 6-4 200 lbs Fr. Just a side note, that is a young, talented group with only Sophomores and Freshman that will all need to mature very quickly to lead our Monarchs into battle.
I still think Williams will end up red-shirting this year but, will push all the QB's on the roster. I am leaning toward Hoy as the starter for several reasons. 1). His experience and maturity will give him the advantage for the potential to be the starting QB. 2). Much of my anticipation and optimism for my prediction is predicated off the excitement level of Ron Whitcomb. His enthusiasm and how he almost salivated when he would talk about Hoy during his recruitment and after his commitment.
With that said it will still all come down to performance and will be difficult to get ready for the start of the season with such a small amount of time left for all the needed preparation for this upcoming season. Much of the final outcome will also happen with on the job training. I'm really looking forward to this year and the QB competition just adds to the drama that will make this year even more for us all to enjoy and watch. IMO, ODU Football is on the brink of moving to the next level of "Aim High".

I believe that Williams will redshirt as well. That is the way we do things. However I keep hearing bits and pieces that might make this a surprise.
In any event, Hoy is likely by far the best pure athlete of the group, maybe on the entire team.
We have no idea how that will translate on the field and in our system. This is an entirely different level of football than he is used to.
Back to Williams.
If he is that good (and I personally have no idea), we could see him on the field. This will be the best ODU team that we have ever fielded, period; and maybe the best for a few years to come as we are peaking at a number of positions.
If he is good enough to beat out the others he will start. We need the exposure and successes to enhance our recruiting visibility.
We will recruit QBs every season. The better we are the better chance we have of getting the better players; at all positions.

RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Summer Practice Discussion
I've heard that BL and 3 others have bromance over the summer months and have been working out at a high school in Chesapeake.
We're all waiting for the battle at QB to start!!!
I think it works out this way right now as of 8/7/17 with all the unknowns.
% chance to start game 1.
35% BL: Knows the system the best of all QBs right now.
30% Hoy: If he has meshed with the guys and has the talent people claim he'll leap BL.
25% DA: Still think he is a half a season away from being game ready.
10% Williams is 16 or 17 years old and think a redshirt year would help him with college life and help set the gap between years from the other QBs
It wouldn't surprise me to see two or three QBs get game action the first game. BW didnt name DeMarco the starter until after the 2nd game of the 2009 season. Having played 3 qbs until we played at Jacksonville.
RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Summer Practice Discussion
It is good to be back for football season and I agree with 78. This is a good group of mobile quarterbacks, now if they can just execute Brian Scott, Bobby Wilder and Rob Whitcomb's game plan. It could be a really good season. None of these quarterbacks should be standing back there like the Statue of Liberty.
RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Summer Practice Discussion
Find it a little off that Bobby Wilder stated Blake LuRussa will get the bulk of the first team repetitions and the pre fall camp video spends 5 seconds focused on BL name. Wilder states that Hoy and Williams will practice with the team’s younger players.
