I thought that I saw a 2 deep roster posted with Tyner as the starter... of course that could always change if the job is still up for grabs.

I saw an article in which Bailiff said the starter may not be announced until game time.

Probably wants a chance to scout out the local Australian talent to see if there are better options.

I know you are trying to negative toward Bailiff, but that came across as being negative toward our players.

He did this before, when McHargue won the three way race. I am sure he will make a choice soon, and am equally sure it will not be made public until the game.

No, you had it right. From the evidence presented last year as well as Bailiff's quotes from earlier this summer, it's clear that QB is not of the strengths of this team.

I went to the scrimmage, Defense is way ahead of the offense.

I remember attending a comparable scrimmage before the 1976 season where the score at the end of the day was 7 to 6. Defense clearly dominated. How well did that predict the season? Well, Kramer made all-American at QB, we had one of the more prolific Rice offenses ever, but our defense couldn't stop people, so we finished 3-8. You can't really tell from intrasquad scrimmages. Got to go up against some people in different color uniforms before you can tell what you have.

Our entire secondary was wiped out by injuries by the third game of the season, and we had an incredibly awful first (and last) year defensive coordinator, but yeah, our defense was awful. And it was all seniors, meaning we were even worse the next year.

Strange since the offense has essentially the same OC and the defense has a new OC and is changing schemes. Hope everything comes together on both sides of the ball in time to surprise Stanford!

Not strange. We are installing a new offense. See Pitt's 2016 offense for reference.

Homer Rice was a brilliant offensive mind, of whom I once hard Bloody Joe Davis mutter, "He can't even spell defense." He put all his eggs in the basket of making Kramer a star, hoping that would win enough games and bring enough attention to upgrade recruiting. Kramer lived up to his part, the winning and recruiting not so much.

Gotta disagree with your recruiting statement, for one year anyway. Rice brought in future NFLers Darryl Grant, Mike Downs, Frank Wilson and Robert Hubble as well as multitudes of other future starters in one of the best classes in Rice history, 1977.

But that recruiting was not sustained. Maybe Homer could have sustained it. But after 1-10 in 1977, he left, and I think the recruiting was going to suffer even had he stayed.

A short video of today's(?) scrimmage was posted on twitter. Did anybody here attend? From what I saw, running back #25 was very involved, including a nice run where he broke several tackles. JT Granato threw a redzone TD pass in the highlights. Ellerbee spoke and said the defense played better than the offense but the offense still had some moments that exposed what the D needs to work on.
