I did! I was also sitting by Cawoo haha. Nice to meet you...kinda. Cawoo bringing the message board together haha

As 7 noted they threw very little today so it was really hard to make any kind of judgement on the QBs. Not that that stops us here at the Dog Pound of course!

August 5th Practice Notes
Thanks 7. Based on your notes, it looks like Harbison is buried down to 4th string at best at RB. Did you notice anything decent from at all? Was hoping he could be our power back especially down at the Goalline

I was the clown with such poor social skills that I did not introduce 1981 to 7 all afternoon....

I'm feeling good about what I saw the last two days. High tempo practices, a lot of focus and energy, and what looks like to me a renewed commitment to being physical above all else. The offensive emphasis (so far) doesn't look like they're trying to cure cancer... unless the cure for cancer is hitting you repeatedly in the mouth until you spit teeth.

It was a nice time, though, seeing 7 and 1981. I was out there Friday, as well. I thought about going today, but I don't think I'll make it. That final grad class paper for "Building Film Study Into Your Curriculum" apparently ain't gonna write itself and high school football practice starts tomorrow.

My biggest fear this year is that the defense will be on the field ALL the time.

They ran the ball A LOT yesterday so all of the backs were seeing plenty of time. I'm going again today so I'll make sure I pay closer attention to him, but I def thought he looked the part yesterday.

Gotta keep in mind they hadn't even put full pads on yet and today is what, the fifth practice? Plenty of time for people to make moves up and down the depth chart.

RE: August 5th Practice Notes
Sunday, August 6th Update:

Anytime I post one of these practice reports, I always feel the need to remind people the defense is usually going to look better than the offense. There is very little live tackling which all but eliminates the run game and even when they do go live, you're obviously never allowed to touch the QB every which totally eliminates the QB run game. NIU is a run first team with a ton of QB runs so the offense will never look as good as it does when tackling is live. With that being said...

There was very little to be excited about from any 3 of the QBs for the first 90 minutes of practice. At one point I asked 1981 if any WR had caught a pass in team but Beebe (more on him) yet and he corrected me and asked if anybody period had caught a pass but Beebe. Blake dropped a pretty well thrown deep ball from Santa, but other than that it just wasn't very good from any of the 3 QBs.

HOWEVER, in the last half hour plus of practice, they went live in 11 on 11 and after a slow start all 3 of the QBs led scoring drives which was nice to see.

On Santa's scoring drive he hit Beebe 3 or 4 times including a 15 or so yard TD on a slant. Beebe looked really, really good today. Hands down the best WR on the team.

Graham's drive ended in a FG, although he could have very easily been picked off by Allen in the end zone. He threw high and behind Wesley and tipped balls over the middle usually end up in picks.

Childers' drive was a bit unusual in the fact he picked up a 3rd and 15 and a 4th and about 11. He hit Wimann on a little pass in the flat and Wimann trucked Mykelti Williams and scored.

While yesterday the QBs didn't do a lot of bad they just didn't do anything particularly great either, there was a fair amount of bad today.

Embry should have picked off Graham early on. Smalls could/should of had a pick 6 off Childers early on. Allen also could have picked off Santa. Lurry picked off Childers but Carey ruled it a sack.

Having watched two practices, I would be surprised if Graham or Santa (or some combination of the two) don't start/play against Boston College. Again, just based off the two practices I saw, I would give a slight edge to Santa, but he wasn't THAT much better than Graham.

Here's the best way I could break it down:
Graham gives you the least amount of bad, but he gives us less noticeably good than Santa
Santa gives you the most amount of good, but he'll give you more bad than Graham
I saw the least amount of good and the most amount of bad from Childers

Childers had a tendency to try to keep plays alive too long and caught the wrath of Carey multiple times because it. That's probably normal being a freshman, but it's just the truth.

There's still a long way to go, but I just don't see how Childers does enough to unseat Graham/Santa between now and the opener.

I would say I'm back on team Santa after the last two days because he was a little better and I think he has more upside, but if i'm a betting man you'll see both 17 and 7 play on the opening Friday.

Other notes:
As mentioned above, Beebe was awesome. "We" are going to need a big year from both him and Wimann.

I thought DJ Brown had a really nice practice. Made a great one handed catch on a throw from Santa that was way behind him.

Both Trayshon Foster and Trequan Smith saw time with the 1s at S opposite of Allen.

Smalls and Embry saw a lot of time with the 1s at CB. They really limit Lurry's reps. Smalls and Embry both certainly look the part.

Even with the limited reps, Lurry fell awkwardly on his head making a tackle from Beebe and didn't return to practice.

Don't think Sutton Smith practiced today, and in his absence true freshman Matt Lorebeck and JUCO Drequan Brown both saw time with the 1s.

Williams had a really nice hit on Beebe.

Jordan Nettles was getting a lot of reps and had a really nice practice. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he saw some playing time this year. I did keep an eye on Harbison today, and he was out there but didn't really do anything of note.

Dillon Thomas, again, is somebody I would expect to see playing this year.

Despite having never played CB before, I thought the iowa transfer Jonathan Parker looked surprisingly good. Had a nice breakup on a pass intended for Tears during team. I think he'll be a nice contributor on special teams.

Trust me I was driving that train haha. And it's not like he was just ungodly bad or anything. I'm just not sure how he unseats the two guys with more experience from what I saw the last two days.

No reason to be overly down about him or anything though.

Ha I don't think the Childers hype train was necessarily because of how good Childers was but how bad our options were. I think it has to be Santa going forward. Give the kid the rest of the reps throughout camp and let him get ready for BC. The game is in 3 weeks, if Carey goes Santa he needs to decide that now and give him the reps. If Carey doesn't name a starter by the end of this week I can almost guarantee Graham starts BC

RE: UPDATED: 8/5 Practice Notes (8/6 Update on Page 4)
Well said, I concur with just about everything noted by 7 above. A couple of quick additions:

-Jordan Huff looks like he could score on every play if he wanted to.

-Devin Webster and Herlandez Corley did some good things and caught my eye today. They held up well at tackle and got in the backfield too.

-Steckler was not dressed today so the first team O-line rotated various combinations of Isaac Hawn, Nate Veloz and Brayden Patton at guard. Dale Brown worked at right tackle with the twos. Benn Olson and Austin Warner took turns at center with the twos.

-I'll second that Jonathan Parker definitely looks interesting at corner. You can see why they like him there. Great speed and quickness.

-The freshmen linebackers Jordan Cole, Rayshawn Gay and Michael Kennedy look like clones of each other. I kept getting them mixed up. They look to me like they have a chance to be very good down the road.

-Matt Lorbeck was in the backfield a lot.

-Second that Nettles showed nice burst.

Thanks as always for the write ups--not exactly what I was hoping to hear about the QBs. Yikes.

By the way one of the best defensive players in America is going to be edge-rushing whoever starts week 1 lol

NIU1981 and 7, how does are three QB current situation compare to Macintosh/Hare/Maddie? If memory serves, we didn't hear a whole lot if positive from those three either. In fact, I recall that Carey wasn't happy with many of their practices.

I lived in North Carolina then, so unfortunately didn't get to witness any of those practices. However, i do always remember being super impressed with Hare's arm when I saw him practice as a freshman, something I haven't come away with here.

From having just seen 5 of the 6 play, I would take any of McIntosh, Hare, and Maddie over Graham and Santa. I still to this day think McIntosh, Hare, and Maddie were interchangeable though. I think any of the 3 could have been really good QBs here.
