Do people forget the starting QB missed the entire season last year with an injury? Harnish-Lynch-Hare were a damn good trio of QBs. Way better than Toledo, WMU, or Miami (lol). This staff had a string of weird/bad luck with QB injuries, Seth Collins flaking, and Alec Ingold being taken by Wisconsin.
This prevailing thought here that this staff can't coach offense or can't develop taken is laughable though. They're 11-5 in conference the last two years playing 5 different QBs. They have some sort of idea how to get the most out of talent.
So it took Carey and his staff 4 years to finally get a Rodney Hall at QB with other offers. After the Orange Bowl the recruiting should have been taken to the next level (i.e. No longer recruiting kids with no offers or a few 1-AA offers but instead consistently getting kids with mid-major and higher offers).
Yes, those three were a solid trio of QBs, but were not brought here while Carey was head coach.
They have not done a good job of developing talent (Kenny Golloday was already an elite talent and Huff is as well), most have agreed that our offensive line has not been as good as it used to be these last two years. The best QB last season after Hare was moved to WR (Maddie) and four years later and they still don't sound high on Graham.
The developed Lurry into an all american cornerback, ACRB into the MAC TD leader, Da'Ron Brown into a stud WR, developed some undersized DEs into a force IE Fleming. You can't say that the staff hasn't done some incredible things to keep NIU out of the gutter. We've had some tough years due to an incredible amount of injuries, but the next man up philosophy has worked out pretty darn well considering. If the team stays healthy and one of the three QBs can just be serviceable and run our offense we should certainly be competing for a MAC title.

As for the 11-5 in conference record, I'm pretty sure if we looked into those 11 wins most of them were bad teams we beat. We have had some pretty lopsided non-conference losses and even lost to WIU, which was supposed to be our easy win.

Nah, NIU had one 5-7 year so the coaching staff hasn't recruited anybody good and hasn't developed any talent ever

They beat an undefeated ranked opponent on the road during that stretch and a 9 win to be WMU team with Ryan Graham (who according to this place is the worst player ever) playing QB during that stretch too.

Funny how if you go back 3 years when this place was crying for respect, nobody would talk about how "we" were playing some of the worst teams in college football.

We beat 1-win EMU, 2-win Buffalo, 3-win Kent State, Ball State, and Miami, 4-win BGSU and Ball State teams. Losses to 3-win Boston College and 1-AA WIU. Blowout losses to San Diego State (which the final score made it look better than it actually was), USF, and Boise. Sorry if most of that doesn't impress me. The direction arrow has been pointing down under Carey.

The San Diego state game was a 7 point game in the third quarter and with 8 minutes left in the game. That's not a misleading final score.
And yes, the MAC is full of bad teams. Thank you for the update lol

You were the one touting up that awesome 11-5 conference record. Sorry it doesn't fit your argument as well because they were mostly wins over bad teams.

Of course they were! The MAC is terrible. Most teams you play are awful. When NIU was going 8-0 or 7-1 in conference, most wins were against awful teams

I love this argument. The coaching staff gets dogged for not developing the bad players and gets no credit for developing the "elite talent" players. Yeah, okay. Disregard every other NIU All-MAC player that was recruited as a 2* player out of high school...those guys must have just had natural elite skills that they developed on their own.
As noted, the QB situation was definitely hurt by the Collins flaking/Ingold bailing. Also, Hare/Maddie would have been a lot more productive if they weren't injured constantly. You could say the same thing for Graham...I have no idea what he might have been without injuries+concussions but I'm sure they didn't help his development. Should they have had more behind him? Yeah. At the same time, people were excited about Santa, Childers AND Hall coming here. Injuries have absolutely decimated our QBs over the past 3 years.

Yes, but we were also blowing them out as well as beating BCS teams and other mid-majors. Now we lose to 3-win Boston College and 1-AA teams then get the doors blown off by USF, Boise, and Marshall. Teams we would have been more competitive against in the past.
All I'm saying is Carey hasn't done much to show he is worth keeping and his recruiting did not get better. These are all issues that developed under his watch. He was given a great gig and he's slowly driving it off a cliff.

Im pretty sure Carey would have to be video taped punching a player for people to disapprove of him on this board. I never thought our fanbase would be content with being a middle to lower end MAC team, it is pretty astounding. I wouldn't even feel so bad about the situation if not having to watch the ineptitude and circus act at quarterback. Sometimes you really really wonder if he is making an effort to get fired.

Just because we don't say Carey should be fired 20 times on every thread doesn't mean we're impressed with him or that we are content.

It will be good to have a running back in the backfield who is a threat to take it all the way on any carry.
I have missed that in the last few years.

Is Mykelti Williams getting some good reps in at Safety?

From what I've read it sounds like he has had 4+ picks in scrimmages/full team drills. I'm guessing he'll be on the field a lot.
