"Close Calls" You'd Like To Have Back
Started this discussion on our App State message board and it's taken off so I thought I'd bring it here...

App has had several near-upsets in the last 20 years or so. Clemson in '97, Auburn in '99, Tennessee in '16 etc all within 14 points.

What's THE big time game in which your team nearly pulled the upset that you'd love to have back, to get another crack at?

2014 - Washington - I know the score wasn't close at the end, but was up 14-0 at the half, and then the injury black hole opened up.
2016 - Wisconsin

For App, I'd like to have the Tennessee game.

I can't decide...

2014 NC State (fumbled trying to go under center on the NCSU goal line to take a 27-10 lead in the fourth quarter)
2014 Georgia Tech (a bad call which the ACC commissioner personally called HC Willie Fritz to apologize for may have turned that one)
2015 UGA (muffed punt might very well have cost us that one)

I wouldn't really call a 14 point game a near upset but...

Illinois 2014. Dennis Green would say we let them off the hook. RIP.

In 2008, Troy lead #20 LSU 31-3 with 1:30 left in the 3rd QTR. We lost 40-31.

That's why I said "within". Some games were closer than others. Some games you could've been leading late and a mistake or late run by the opponent let it slip away.

RE: "Close Calls" You'd Like To Have Back
We gave Tennessee a close game at Neyland in 2013. Our QB got on roll and we were knocking off huge chunks of yards in the 2nd half and nearly pulled it out when, with 3 minutes to go, we got down to the Tennessee 7 yard line only to throw a pick in the end zone and lose by 7. We would have had to go for 2 to win it, but coach had already called for it and I think the chances would have been better than even.

Same year App opened against LSU....which didn't go well. The game was supposed to be prime time ESPN due to App coming off the National Championship and defeat of Michigan the year before.

31-3...and losing...reminds me of 28-3. One of those i'm quite pleased about. Troy only ran 17 times though. Can't say i'm surprised that LSU was allowed enough possessions to make a comeback at the end with that stat.

I believe recency bias plays a factor but Tennessee and Troy come to mind. If App beats Troy, there is a lone conference champion. Beating Tennessee would've been a big story line because of opening weekend and the expectations for Tennessee. Beat them both, and only have one loss, App would've been on the air waves with discussions about the NY6 bid, though there wouldn't have been a shot at being selected. Being discussed is quite an accomplishment for a Sun Belt program at this point. Regardless, neither of those events happened.

If the call on the field is not reviewed and overturned, and it's ruled that stAte scored on the next to last play of the game against ULL, there is a lone conference champion.

The two that come to mind...

2009 we literally had then #13 ranked Iowa on the ropes and the only reason the greatest upset in Astate history didn't occur was because we couldn't hit two "chip shot" FGs which ultimately doomed Astate to lose 24-21

The second would be 2015 Missouri; once again had the tigers on the ropes and had the halftime lead but losing then starting qb fredi knighten to injury our offense went down the stalled crapper and Mizzou was able to sneak out a close victory

Damnit. I had Iowa blocked from my memory.

Since he said calls, plural, I've got to go with ALL of them.
