THE CLASS OF 2021

Applications for admission: 18,063
Admission offers made: 2,865 (16% admission rate)
Admission offers accepted: 1,049 (as of 8/1/17) -- Yield = 36.6%

Texas residents: 436 (41.6%)
Non-Texas residents, including international citizens: 613
Countries represented: 21

29% Asian American, 29% White, 17% Hispanic, 11% International citizens, 7% Black, 5% Multiracial, <1% Native American and <1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander

- - - - -

Comparisons with previous two years:

Rice accepted 955 for the classes of 2019 and 2020. So this new class (2021) will be larger by nearly 100.

Applications are down a tiny bit: 18,063 vs 18,236 last year. But this year saw the 2nd most applications ever. (Previous 2nd: 17,942 had applied for the Class of 2019.)

Acceptance rate is about constant (15-16%), but yield (enrolled/accepted) is increasing: 33.4% (2019) => 34.3% (2020) = 36.6% (2021).

Asian and Hispanic students rising a little (2019-2020-2021): Asian: 26-25-29%; Hispanic: 13-16-17%.

Black & International students ~ constant at 6-7% and 11%, respectively.

Caucasian students down a little: 39% (2020) => 29% (2021). Multiracial up 3% (2020) => 5% (2021).

The Texas resident quotient is on par with previous classes. The Asian % seems a little bit higher than usual, but not too much.

International pretty much means Asian as well. Countries other than China and Korea end up with 1 student each, so the incoming class is ~40% Asian.

Really! That is terrible. No wonder the athletic program has no chance of creating excitement in the student body. Has it always been this lopsided? The Asian students no doubt have the tools to graduate from Rice but what else have they done such as volunteering in the community and involvement in student affairs. I thought this was a requirement before even being considered to come to Rice ? Most Asian students I know are great students but do not contribute anything else to the University while at Rice.

Terrible indeed! I can see why the athletics department might not be so keen on all the international students, especially considering the nearly 30 international student-athletes who represent our school.

Right because Asian people don't like sports. We've never met but I'm Asian, btw. I've been organizing the Houston Football Watch parties for the last 3 years, I volunteer to mentor and review resumes at the Career expos every year and I am involved in various alumni affinity groups. I also donate to Owl Club every year and apparently I am only about 1 of around 1000 alumni who donate yearly to Owl Club. I could just as easily say where the white people at??

What do YOU contribute to Rice besides posting about how International students don't contribute to Rice? Not to mention they pay full boat so others can get a subsidized education. Basketball is pretty popular in China, chances are if they like basketball in China they probably would like watching it here, except for old alums who want to tell them they are not welcome.

This year's e-mail did not have academic stats. But here's what was in last year's (Class of 2020) message:

Quote:The middle 50% test score ranges of admitted students represent the highest scores in Rice's history. (* denotes highest possible score in the range)

SAT Critical Reading: 710-800*
SAT Math: 740-800*
SAT Writing: 700-790
ACT Composite: 33-35
