The Worldwide Leader’s channel dedicated to college sports, ESPNU, will assume the fictitious role of ESPN 8: “The Ocho” on Aug. 8 in honor of the movie “Dodgeball,” the network announced Thursday. The satirical play on ESPN’s sports coverage, made famous by characters Cotton McKnight (Gary Cole) and Pepper Brooks (Jason Bateman) who mixed dodgeball commentary with iconic sports jokes, “The Ocho” was designed as a platform for little-known sports to make it on the big screen.

Now, ESPN is bringing Vince Vaughn’s and Ben Stiller’s “Dodgeball” spirit to life with a 24-hour lineup of everything from backyard sports to a contact, tag-like sport derived from India.

Starting at midnight, ESPNU will feature among others a cornhole tournament, a roller derby championship, the Firefighter World Challenge and, keeping with the theme, games of trampoline dodgeball.

Even with all the parallels, the missing piece to ESPN’s experiment with “The Ocho” could wind up being a crucial one.

“However, unfortunately, Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks will not be on-hand to provide colorful commentary of all these great events,” the press release said.

What the hell is Kabaddi?

ABC tried that once. It was called "Wide World of Sports." But it was only one or two hours a week. They ran out of content surprisingly quick and found the "battle of the network stars" spinoff from that.

OTOH this could be the final resting place for AAC football.
