BBJ: Q&A with Mayor Bell
https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/n...-bell.html

Excerpt:

What is your stance on the proposed stadium and expansion of the Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex?

I am in support of a new stadium to be located in the downtown area. We are currently in discussion with BJCC, UAB and the private sector to find ways to close the financial gap of the annual debt service to pay for an open air stadium.

So at least it seems like he's moved on from the dome idea.

The two questions remain unanswered -- What funding can / will the city provide and What land will be used once a decision is made?

These decisions will potentially have immense financial impact upon the business future of the city, particularly in its status as the largest city and business center in Alabama.

The land has been determined for quite a while now. Just east of the exhibition halls & Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; just north of the Uptown district.

Is that the same land originally acquired for the MPF? If it is, then the city may be forced to choose between building one at the expense of the other.

for the 87th time, if an open air stadium gets built under the auspices of the BJCC Authority, the "MPF" is not happening. Get that through your head. The dome and the open air stadium, regardless of the land used for either, are mutually exclusive.

They are "mutually exclusive" if there is money and land for both. For B'ham, the money and the land choices are critical to its financial future for this century -- unless the BJCC can do it all without city participation on either count..

The point is, both won't happen. It will be one or the other. Chances are, if anything happens, it will be open air. Why? Because as Mayor Bell said in his interview, it has joint support from UAB, Birmingham Businesses, the BJCC and the city. The MPF doesn't have that.

And yes, I believe that if the city wants to hold out for the MPF that the remaining entities can make it happen without them at some point.

I visited Birmingham this past weekend for the first time in over four years. The steps forward that have been taken in the entertainment vein are astounding to me. I could be wrong (maybe I've been living in rural NC too long), but it seems to me that there is a new drive to make Birmingham a destination city that I've not seen before.

I have never denied that I prefer the building of the MPF as the best way for the city of B'ham to move into its future. I lived in B'ham for over 60 years, and I saw its leaders nearly always opt for the smaller, cheaper and easier choice. I am a believer in Dr Joe Volker's admonition to not dream too small a dream.

Now I see that mantra denied in order to get the smaller, cheaper and easier objective. The city will live with whatever choice it makes, and its consequences for the city's status among its peers. I will abide the choice made, but if it is the usual, I will not think it the best for the city's brightest future. It will have settled for something less.
