Universities do not give minorities preferred admissions, they provide black and hispanics preferred admissions. Asians must exceed admissions standards for whites by 200 points and for Blacks by 480 points at Harvard. The real solution is for all universities to transparently publish their admission standards. If they give a group advantage - e.g. Legacies, races, sports, etc, they would be clear, proud and unambiguous and let people judge them. Today, selective universities (e.g. Duke) are destroying admissions records to prevent them from disclosure in law suits. Transparency is the solution followed by a public debate

Whatever the admission criteria is for a public university, it should not be based on race/ethnicity. That should never be in the criteria. If anything males are struggling vs. females in admissions. Asians are probably the most discriminated against based on their test scores.

As for me I'm the seventh child of a guy that was laid off from the closing steel mills of Lackawana NY. My schools were all in minority communities with the same teachers, the same tests, same ratty old books. Clearly though being picked on for being in the racial outgroup imparted me with huge societal advantages...

Yep, the hypocrisy is mind boggling. It's like folks like that have no problem doing to others exactly what they are complaining about was done to them. In the end, that makes them NO DIFFERENT than those they despise. It makes them the exact same. Hypocrites.

This is my take. If an AA and hispanics are afforded special treatment in admissions it is wrong. Solely because you are insulting that race or ethnicity by insinuating that they cannot measure up in intelligence to other groups. As far as coming from a low-achieving high school is not an excuse as there are many that come from such backgrounds and overachieve. Take Dr. Ben Carson for instance. If I remember right he had stated that he rose above a situation where he wasn't expected to, yet he became a brain surgeon and a presidential candidate. It depends on the individual and how he is brought up, regardless of his economic situation. I'm no genius but I figured out pretty early that if I didn't move from the tenements I would probably end up in a desperate situation. Everyone who has the will, will get a way to improve his situation. But. You have to work at it, it doesn't come free.

I get your and the commentators point, but a Private (Like A Duke) school should be, IMO, allowed to admit or deny whoever they'd like. If those attending or looking to attend disagree with whatever policy or level of "diversity", then they can go elsewhere.

Publics? Nope. GPA, class rank, SAT, extra stuff etc. As close to merit based as possible. That said, there is some value in a diversity of people and differing views on something like a College Campus, so just broaden the pool by basically lowering stds across the board.

My Son is currently at a solid school, and I believe getting a good education. He also pledged a fraternity and of something like 22 pledges there were Chinese natl's (2). Russian!!! (Time to investigate!) natls (2-3), "Other" Asian (2-3), couple Muslims from wherever, 2-3 Black guys and the rest your basic suburban Honkys.

IOW's pretty closely matches the area the school is located in and that's pretty much the way it should be. No need to force things.
