NIU is a very spread out campus that isnt attractive, architecture is terrible. Dorms overall are terrible. It has no wow factor whatsoever. You tell me, what wows a new student when they pull into DeKalb? Annie Glidden Road and nothing that makes sense campus wise to the left or right? I was shocked when I visited, you dont even feel like you are pulling into a campus.

Huh? Drive or walk down Lucinda or Castle Drive and for sure you feel like you are on a college campus.

Wow factor for me? One visit to the Paperback Grotto is what did it for me!

That's harsh. I've been to many colleges and I'm quite fond of NIU. All of the recent upgrades on campus have made NIU a very nice campus. When I took my daughter to visit numerous colleges, including Virginia Tech and WVU, their dorms were not nearly as good as NIU.

Take it with a grain of salt. . . for a total annual cost, they add tuition and room & board together. For some reason at NIU they list room & board at $0. Not quite apples to apples.

Bingo.

Look at tuition vs. some of the other schools on there. If anything it explains why kids don't go to NIU.

until this year I think, many out of state students could attend the U of Alabama football factory for nothing based on "merit" scholarships even for students who were not that meritorious.

Impossible.
If you read the link, you need to live at your parent's house in DeKalb. Zero for room and board.

What is interesting is how cheap in state tuition is at several great schools.

Either the article was update or you didn't read it closely. It says Northeastern in Chicago not NIU. I'm guessing they don't have dorms there.

The article was updated. It did say NIU. I wouldn't trust much of what it includes given its level of accuracy.

I don't think it's the Cheapest, all around. But upon reading -- they have to be rated in the "Top 220" in the nation. Okay, makes sense. I KNOW that WMU isn't the cheapest 4-year college in MI, so I was scratching my head over putting them in there like that. Plenty of D2 schools that are at least a little cheaper.

That's not right... go to the NIU website. Tuition, Room, Board and Fees total about $23K. Add in more for books and you aren't close to $32K. Illinois is closer to that dollar amount.
