Quarterback this season
What are the chances Graham gets beat out for the starting job? It's probably not realistic because they're so young, but some of the film I've seen on Childers and (especially) Hall has me pretty excited about both of them. Childers seems like he would fit into our system well as a runner, and Hall has an absolute cannon for an arm.

I guess I'm just hoping that either of them or Santa will be able to bring a spark to the offense that we know Graham isn't capable of. Thoughts?

You have them flip-flopped. Hall runs the ball as well as any player on the team. But unfortunately, any player on the team has about the same accuracy as him when passing. He won't see the field until he can start coming within 5 yards of the people he's throwing to.

Childers on the other hand looks to be a fairly accurate passer, while still being a decent, but maybe not great runner.

How I grade our QB quandary-

Graham: passing: very good short, very bad deep
Running: below average
Intangibles: none
Santa : passing: avg short, avg long
Running: slightly above avg
Intangibles: made some plays
Childers: passing: good short, good long
Running: good
Intangibles: size, unknown with upside.

Only Graham has enough attempts to be graded. But that's my early take on the other two. Hall's not in the picture this year.

Hall, accuracy of a canon lol. But he looks great as a runner; Electifying.

I believe that Randy mentioned on another thread that Santa is working with the ones right now.

RE: Quarterback this season
I think it's way too early to grade Santa's throwing ability. He was awful in the first game because he was busy crapping all over himself. He was sharp against Kent State but it was Kent State. Hopefully, he will show poise, confidence, and accuracy. Also, I thought he ran the ball just as well as Maddie in the two games. He's no Lynch but he looks like he can be a better runner than Maddie and Harnish.

Hopefully they have him on a throwing regiment that will develop touch and accuracy... Hopefully.

Pulling hard for Childers to be the guy because he looks most electric on film and Graham hasn't impressed. Have a bad feeling they take the conservative approach and go with the experience but hope Childers gets a shot.

In college, you usually see the biggest improvement from the freshman to the sophomore season. I hope that is what happens with Santa now that he has a better feel for the speed of the game.

That seems fair, I don't even know if you can say Graham is good on short passes, at times he can be very erratic even with that. I will do a pre-emptive cagey post and I know and admit "I have no right to have an opinion because I have not coached one day at the D1 level or have never coached a kid in my life", but if this QB decision is not a no-brainer, I completely give up on this coaching staff. It is obvious to anyone.

A no brainer? Starting a player with zero experience over a kid with two years of running this offense (18 games 8 starts); or a player with two wins in two games, that has showed solid potential and continuos improvement....If Childers leaves camp as the best player, he should get the start, but you make it sound like there is ample evidence already inplace to make this decision. Based on what? Two series in a controlled spring game scrimmage and a HS highlight film. I think Carey has a very tough decision to make that will likely take all of camp to answer.

Based on 2 years of watching Graham. Graham is not the answer, I don't know what the answer is, but it is not Graham, we know this already. Very good guy to have as backup, but if Graham is your starter, you are in some serious trouble. Childers was the best player in spring ball, on tape obviously brings the most dynamics, I just don't see how it can be any other player at this point. He is the only one of the three with any appreciable upside.

You don't think Santa has upside? He ran well, and we didn't really see enough to know how well he can potentially pass. He only played in a couple games.

I think we can say that all the QB's will be improved (including Graham). It's also a fairly certain that no one knows the offense better than Ryan. Santa has only 6 quarters of experience but showed significant improvement; He also took the first team snaps in the spring so he must have showed something this spring. Childers has talent and potential but is a complete unknown. Both Santa and Childers have a ton of mistakes to make before they are good; but both appear to have bigger upsides. What this means to me...we have a bonafide QB battle on our hands; may the best man win. Certainly not a no-brainer

The fact that Graham throughout all his experience hasn't separated himself from the pack is telling enough that he's not the Starter. Let Santa and Childers battle it out. If we have to play Graham he'll be one the best #3 option in the country.

RE: Quarterback this season
I love how people have written off Santa after watching an incredibly limited amount of snaps. I shouldn't be surprised since every spring it's the same...you want what you've never seen before because somehow that will be way better than what you have seen in the past. Harnish was pretty bad his first year after the Minnesota game. I don't see why Santa couldn't develop better touch as a passer and have a similar career. Pretty sure everyone would be okay with that.

Let's also not forget Santa prob took a total of three snaps for the spring and fall of last year. After Hare, Graham and Maddie there was virtually no attention paid to him. Things should be a lot different with all three prepping to be starters.
