I would think a 3-star transfer from Maryland with good size is going to compete for a starting role, regardless of who is available. It's important that Stinnie is healthy when the season starts, but I think we'll have a solid starting 5 plus a couple good backups. With excellent OL coaching and strength training (which JMU has), the team should be good to go. It is a shame Chavious' season ended before it began, but hopefully he'll recover completely and add great depth and experience next season.

I think it depends on why he redshirted his true Fr. year. If there is a documented medical reason that kept him out, then he has a shot. If it was just because he was not ready to play, then it's unlikely.

At one time the 6th year seemed to be very rarely granted and only in very well documented cases, but my impression is that the NCAA is becoming more lenient. Raven Greene got a 6th year. So did Justin Thorpe. I think there was a bit of a surprise in both cases.

Cambell is is their last season in the non scholly Pioneer. They moved to the full scholly Big South for 2018, which I think was announced last year. So I assume this is their 1st season giving schollies, or maybe they won't until next year? Don't know whether or not Fishpaw was on one. If a player wasn't on scholly and didin't play last year (Fishpaw was redshirted at Campbell) would he have to sit out this year after a lateral transfer?

Good question. I had assumed because it was a lateral transfer he would be unavailable this year, regardless of whether he was on scholarship. However, after doing some research there are some situations where the player is immediately eligible to play. But part of the criteria appears to distinguish between recruited players and true walk-ons. So, since he was announced as part of Campbell's 2016 class, I assume he'd be considered a recruited player and thus must sit out a year, even if no scholarship was received.

Yeah, with Fishpaw, he was recruited and began his career when Campbell was still non scholarship. They announced last December that they'd begin offering football schollies in conjunction with their FB team moving to the Big South. Guessing he was not awarded one and decided to walk on elsewhere.
