More and more administrators telling me really hard to go beyond 14. We may have reached peak expansion, super conferences.

J Delany reiterates at B10 media days if ESPN had come up with a more reasonable offer 13 years ago, Big Ten content would all be on ESPN.

J Delany reiterates at B10 media days if ESPN had come up with a more reasonable offer 13 years ago, Big Ten content would all be on ESPN.

1. They all say (Slive, Swofford, Sankey, and Delany) that they aren't looking to expand and that 14 was good. But they all said that about 12 as well. Slive since retiring talked more openly about very large conference in the offing.

2. I'm sure he didn't want to upset the world, but the issue is now about revenue, meaning money. If additions are made (even Maryland and Rutgers) it's the financial gap that upsets the world, not the schools selected.

3. You big answer for everything that is to come is in his last statement. That sounds a lot to me like an open door for ESPN to pick up the majority share of Big 10 rights in 2024. If so Texas and Kansas to the Big 10 starts looking a lot more promising. That opens the door for Oklahoma to the SEC and whether that move is with T.C.U., Iowa State, or Oklahoma State doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

4. ESPN's goal has been to own the rights to the all of the product within the states. That gives them the ultimate leverage in collecting ad rates. If they once again own the majority of Big 10 rights that puts them in control of everything East of the Mississippi and within 1 state of the Mississippi's left bank. And that means they own every time slot until 9 PM on every football Saturday.

5. I've noted many times now that it appears that the Big 10 schools are divesting their shares in the BTN and I have speculated that could be so they could change the business model of that network. Well if they are divesting (39.2% a year ago and on pace to divest another 10% this year then by the time their current contract expires they could be fully divested. If this is indeed what is happening it would be perfect timing for switching to the ESPN model of simply sharing the profits of the network without having investment in it. And that would mean no buy in for a newcomer which would make assimilating Texas much easier.

6. If ESPN did reacquire the Big 10 it would make the final movement of the Big 12 much easier to manage and a structure for P4 playoffs much easier to develop.

It's interesting that a CBS guy keeps bringing realignment back to the public's attention. One might get the idea that the networks are in cahoots.

Would that really be surprising?

Dodd has been one of the best sources willing to cover realignment across all of college sports.

I think the only issue with that is FOX still owns the BTN and I think they just extended their contract to 2034.

Well then, Texas won't be available for the Big 10 and neither will Virginia Tech. Of course ESPN could always buy out FOX. But, it's probably better for the SEC if ESPN is not obliged to the Big 10 when the Big 12 blows apart.

You know if the ACC was smart they would let us move to 16 with N.C. State and Va Tech and then they could get there with Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma just like we all should have done in 2010-1. It still works. Louisville could join that quad.

Louisville, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas
Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami
Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest
Boston College, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse

Kentucky, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech
Auburn, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina
Alabama, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt
Arkansas, Louisiana State, Missouri, Texas A&M

Those are two very nice conferences.

Nah, that would doom the ACC to geographic discontinuity forever. My counter-proposal is this: move S. Carolina and Auburn to the ACC, then let the SEC grab those Big XII teams.

I'm not convinced that Auburn would be a good "fit", maybe S. Carolina and West Virginia and let the SEC move on the Big 12 schools of their choice.
