Here's an interview that current Dukes coach, Mike Houston, did on ESPN Harrisonburg radio a couple weeks ago. Sorry if this was previously posted.

Hearing Everett at a press conference and then Mike Houston... It's night and day. Thanks for Vad and injecting some life into the program but good lord, I don't even slightly miss you.

Withers prefaced any disappointment of the season by saying "I will say that 31% of our roster is true freshmen... which is scary but fun and neat."

JMU's current roster is 34% true freshmen and this is not uncommon across many D1 programs.

The dude sure doesn't mind mentioning "James Madison" frequently during this press conference. Don't blame him though, who wouldn't want to be associated with a winner.

I like the way you put that. Actually, I'm not so sure he's a bad coach, but rather a really bad defensive coach. I want to give him credit for his offense at JMU, but the man failed when Vad went down in the Richmond game from that point through the Colgate loss. Some will give him credit for a couple of wins after Homecoming, but neither were impressive and he completely changed the way the offense operated taking some previously well utilized players totally out of the game plan.

Agree.

Though we shouldnt sell Houston's promotion skills either. He just promotes different things than Withers. You might argue more substantive things, like national championships.

Houston simply carries a big stick, no need for a lot of flashy words when you can do what he does.

I've said this before:
-stubborn
-big ego
-bad with the press
-good/great recruiter
-bad on one side of the ball and good on the other,
-consistently out coached & failed to make adjustments, at least on one side of the ball.

That could be used to describe the previous 2 JMU HCs. One didn't make the playoffs enough, the other couldn't beat playoff teams (1-5 vs playoff teams regular season and playoffs). The biggest difference between the 2 was twitter and the introduction of the JMU fashion show..

Withers was very fortunate with 2 things (call it luck if you want):
-Vad Lee (16-4 with him, 2-3 (including RU game when he got hurt) without him)..
-SMU: if that hadn't been a terrible G5 team that JMU got to play, and instead had been the usual P5, it would have been an L. Then maybe no Gameday..

Thank god for Vad Lee. Without him coming to JMU, Withers would probably still be at JMU, no NC last year but rather another early playoff exit (if even made the playoffs), and most of us would be bitching for Withers to be canned..

Ha, you're entitled to your opinion. I actually don't have the vitriol towards Withers as many seem to. He did some things that annoyed everyone, but he also did some things with the program that helped steer back in the right direction. He definitely left Mike Houston with a lot to work with. And, while I think Houston is a much better coach and person, I hope if/when someone comes after him with a ton of money, we understand and don't throw him down the drain as a person. I actually hope we get to that point because it'll mean we had another great year of JMU football.
