The morning after Media Day, Coach Armstrong was up yelling in the hallways at 5am for 3-a-days. Seemed like it lasted a week but I think is was only for 3 or four days before we switched to two-a-days all the way up to game week.

These kids today have no idea. I sometimes wonder how we survived it.

Lots of salt pills.

Yep. The yellow ones.

Salt pills and one 5 minute water break every 1-2 hours, whether you need it or not. Thirst was a sign of weakness.

Water out of a hose and salt pills. We all got Mono my Sophomore year.

Surving is the right word. Minimal sleep, maximum exertion. Just staying hydrated and keeping feet dry was a challenge. Getting to play in half pads for a practice was a treat.

I can honestly say one of the things about football I do not miss is preseason camp. Apparently, one of our current linemen was just as honest when asked about the new early start in July to training camp in lieu of two-a-days. I agree with him 100%. Memphis in August is scorching.
“I mean either way, camp’s going to suck,” junior center Drew Kyser said with a laugh. “It’s fun that you can play football with no school for a whole month, but camp is not fun. It’s camp.”

Yep, I can remember 2 a days all the way back to Jr High - we had to take salt tablets & "limit" the water intake. Crazy........amazing more kids didn't die through it all.
