RE: John Wildhack- We Wont Lose Home Season Due To Carrier Dome Renovation
The ACC is in no position to mandate anything. This is Syracuse's decision and they are doing this to keep up with the Joneses.

I can appreciate that it is a complex project but it is also long overdue. I went to a football game there a few years back and was shocked at how bad it was. It was HOT! It was also very dimly lit and ugly as hell inside and out. I was shocked at how bad it was.

It needs a new facade and a permanent roof at a minimum. What they really need to do is replace it altogether, but that doesn't appear to be on the table.

I remember talking to some locals and they told us that the state of New York offered to build them a new facility off-campus but they turned that down. If true, that was an insane decision. Could that be revisited?

The campus is gorgeous and the surrounding area is also absolutely beautiful. The city itself is nothing much to write home about but it's fine. However, that facility suuuuuucks and they do need to dramatically improve it to keep pace with everyone else.

Gee, don't hold back Doc, tell us how you REALLY feel about the Dome!

I don't mean to be rude, I really don't. I'm just telling the truth.

Also, I'm fully aware that Pitt Stadium was a dump too - so SU is far from alone. I'm just saying that if you're going to do it, you might as well do it right. That building needs a TON of work and it needs it yesterday.

LOL. Thanks for sharing - it made me laugh! I agree with you on the off-campus stadium, though - it seems worth another look, and it's really not as bad as some people make it out to be. Yeah, it's cool to be able to walk from the dorms to the stadium, but if you can take a short (no more than 5 miles, tops) bus ride (especially if it's free) that's not a big deal IMO.

Even the University of South Carolina has a stadium which is basically off-campus, but I don't recall them getting much grief about it (see Google map).

The city turned the new stadium down because it would have involved an investment of $1-200 MM.

And I actually think that the inside is the best-looking stadium that I've ever seen at any level. I think our suites need help, as do the concession stands, locker rooms (so I hear), and outside.

Just reporting what I heard about the ACC telling SU to put a hard roof on it. TIFWISW

The Dome indeed needs to be modernized. It has lots of lipstick applied but needs a facelift.

The locker rooms are being redone this summer.

BTW concessions can't be done in any real big way unless a hard roof is put on. The air supported roof created some restrictions on what can be done concessions wise.

Off campus...the absolute best spot IMHO is located about Two miles north of the stadium. A huge area ready to be developed between Destiny and Downtown.

If they were looking for a spot on campus, what about the area outlined in red below? Or is that already master planned for something else?

If you use the footprint of the Carrier Dome, it looks like it more or less fits without too many issues.

For that matter, is there any chance Oakwood Cemetary (forested area at the bottom of the image) would sell enough land for a stadium? Not sure how close the graves come to campus...

(On closer inspection, it looks like there are graves just across the street from campus, so that's a no-go).

Or what about the land between Meadowbrook Dr and E Colvin St?

Ha, I understand that it would be a big inconvenience during the construction phase.

But once a hypothetical new facility is built, some of the lost parking could potentially be regained on the existing Carrier Dome site.

I do hope Syracuse gets its stadium situation sorted in the near future, whether that's a new facility of a renovated Carrier Dome. Given the space limitations already on campus, it seems like a renovation is the best idea, but who knows what the final decision may be.

If presented with the choice, what would most 'Cuse fans prefer? And has a replacement in that location ever been considered by the administration?

We're pretty divided. In a perfect world on campus is best.

However, building new would cause the least disruption

How so? The only scenario I can imagine is if legal action from the failure cause Syracuse to close its doors. In that case we would just invite Uconn. 05-stirthepot

The stadium is not on campus, in fact it is in an industrial / warehouse area. It's been getting nicer as the years have passed but would be nice to walk around the campus before the game.

If SU builds new and stays on campus...they will go South to the Skytop area. They own the 36 hole Drumlins golf course...and the talk is they could turn it into a 18 to 27 hole golf course and use some of the land to build a new stadium.

To their credit they have done a wonderful job fixing up the fairgrounds parking and converting the old State Farmer's Market complex to a decent tailgating area, but for the average fan they are still tailgating in a private business parking lot.

Also I doubt there is a stadium in the country of the size where the traffic moves a smoothly before and after the game.

But they can put as much lipstick on it as they want it's still an off-campus stadium located in an industrial/commercial area bordered by some of the biggest slums in Richland County.
