RE: Berkman or Bust
I doubt that is an option.

Lance, however, is certainly an option. He clearly wants the job and has been preparing himself for the opportunity by getting his degree, coaching at the HS ranks (successfully), and making it known that he's committed to returning Rice to the level it should be. I'm hoping JK is actively working on a solution. Right now things look terrible on the coaching front. We have 2 coaches. Let that sink in....2 coaches.

They are obviously a baseball family and I know Enrique is currently coaching, not sure about Jose Jr. but they both have coaching knowledge and lots of ties to Houston and Rice. I've seen Jose Jr. attending games recently, tweets about Rice baseball all the time, and his son is playing for Graham next year. Not as big a name as Lance, but one (or both) of the Cruz brothers could be a good fit.

Stop it! Let's hire a real coach with real, proven college coaching experience. Jose has absolutely no coaching experience, and is not going to coach with his son joining the program. Enrique is currently coaching? I thought he's working successfully in a sports management gig in Houston.

As I've posted previously, I'm all for giving Lance an opportunity in the Assistant Coach opening, but NOT as head coach until he proves himself as a D-1 coach.

Enrique is at least teaching baseball. I'm thinking down the line, since Lance was brought up, Cruz is another name associated with the city and the program that knows baseball.

Don't think Wayne can go after kids two years out, can he? Has to have an indication of SAT scores, if i'm not mistaken.

None of our competitors have to worry about that, of course.

Pretty sure Vanderbilt does.

The "have to wait for scores" excuse is a poor one for any sport.

Not impossible to figure out if a kid has what it takes when he's a sophomore or early junior in high school. Look at early HS grades, PSAT scores, talk to teachers, etc...

I knew I'd go to a good school my freshman/sophomore year. Whether that was "really, really" good (like Harvard, Yale, Princeton) or just "good" like UT, I wasn't sure. Damn sure wasn't going to East Mississippi CC.

Not really. They have this school of education that allows them to take kids without the normal entrance requirements for the rest of the student body, as I understand it. The Peabody School, I think it is.

And Rice athletes all have 2200+ on their SAT like the rest of the student body 03-lmfao

Not sure why you feel the need to make a statement like this.

And how might we do that? Will our athletic program shell out enough $$ to steal an established coach from a respectable school? I think not. Even if we get a coach from a lower tier school how do we ensure we do not run the risk of becoming a stepping stone program? I think it is in our best interest to bring in someone with strong ties to Rice that will stay loyal to the program.
