On my birthday the full 100% eclips traverses about 3 hours south of me in southern KY. May take a road trip to let that big ol' moon sized shadow wash over me. Better bring my own cooler because those are mostly dry counties down that way.

If you're outside the of ~70 mile path wide totality, you'll see the moon cross the sun, but it won't cause a noticeable dim in brightness. Depending on how close you are to the path, it'll just look like the moon is taking a bite out of the sun.

If you are in the area of totality, you will be able to witness the "diamond ring" effect in the last moments.

[Image: ts-north-american-2017-solar-eclipse.jpg]

The fact that the moon is positioned JUST PERFECTLY so that it perfectly covers the entire sphere of the sun is an amazing witness to a Creator imo. The Sun is 400 times larger than the moon, yet its just in the right spot so they appear IDENTICAL in size to giving us these amazing perfect full eclipses.

That's awesome it occurs on your birthday. Me and my lady booked a camp site on Ocoee River on the Tennessee/Georgia border for the weekend. On Monday, we'll be going to either Andrews, NC or Athens, TN for the show.

This is only possible because the moon is roughly 1/400th the diameter of the sun, and the sun is 400 times farther away from earth than the moon. Very cool!

yes...but...it is a matter of coincidence of our exact time here. The moon used to be closer and is moving away farther and farther each year.

Going to make a day or two of it. May even spend a day at Mammoth Caves National Park while down there. Great way to spend a day.

I'm just going to walk out in the yard.

My boss has already planned to shut down for the day. With us being in the epicenter and with all the various events going on it's going to be a madhouse around here.
