That's crazy. I'm hoping like every year but not expecting much.

I just want to know who it was that gave NMSU a 1st place vote. I also think Texas State will be worse than CC.

Coach Doug Martin. Apparently coaches can vote for their own team.

If NMSU fails to make a bowl game this year (theyre lucky the SBC has the Arizona Bowl tie in) Doug Martin has to be fired.... right?
If I may ask, no disrespect intended, why has it been since 1960 that NMSU hasnt made a bowl? It cant just be 5+ decades, almost 60 years, of bad coaching hires. What else is going on?

When you look at budgets....just saying if you don't put money into college football, you don't win. Everyone wants to point to a school who's had success without putting money into it. Southern Miss comes to mind as an example. Now compare budgets: southern Miss and New Mexico st. USM has put a lot more money into football over the past several decades, and USM is considered poor.

I don't know how much of it goes to which sport, but NMSU and Southern Miss have overall athletic budgets that are very similar in size. I will say, our facilities seem much nicer for football.
NMSU would have been a better addition to CUSA than the FxU schools or WKU, in my opinion. At least people have heard of you. UTEP has some weird inferiority complex with respect to NMSU that probably doesn't help your case.

RE: NMSU gets a 1st place vote
IMO NMSU's football woes are traceable to lack of money - but also the difficult location.
Las Cruces is a great place to live - but not a real blingy spot for 18-20 year old football players. NM and nearby El Paso do not produce many FBS-level HS football players, and players want to play near friends and family. So most players have to be 'imported'. And you need a lot of good players to make a good team - unlike basketball, where just a few will do the trick. So its harder to attract enough quality players. That has gotten worse over the past decade as several former FCS schools have joined the FBS ranks, increasing competition for players.
So, location is a huge disadvantage. Then combine that with the lack of funds - for things like recruiting and quality assistant coaches. And what you get... is 50 years of frustration.
Take a look at UTEP and UNM. While they both have more money than NMSU - they have not been all that successful in football either. Location, location, location...

Definitely agree. I've long been a fan, though. The way y'all make UTEP people turn salty is funny.
