On August 9, 1945 two major WWII events took place. The U.S. Army Air Force dropped the second A-bomb ("Fat Man") on Nagasaki, and the USSR (finally) declared war on Japan. In return for their help, they demanded the island of Hokaido and the southern half of Sakhalin island. They only got the latter (where years later they shot down a Korean Air Lines plane).

In 1942, one of the Doolittle Raid planes landed in USSR and its crew members were "interned" for many months since the USSR was "neutral" in the Pacific war.
