Green Bay Packers article with mention of former Duke long snapper Derek Hart in the running for the final roster spot... http://journaltimes.com/sports/football/...61fea.html

For now, rookie punter Justin Vogel and rookie snapper Derek Hart have the jobs, but as any NFL specialist will tell you, you’re not only competing head-to-head with any direct in-camp competition, you’re also battling with guys you don’t even know exist. Just ask punter Tim Masthay, who after six seasons was unceremoniously dumped for Jake Schum last summer.

Now, with Schum having been waived/injured during the offseason, the Packers are assured of having their third different opening-day punter in three years, whether that’s Vogel or a punter to be named later. Hart, meanwhile, will aim to be as consistent as predecessor Brett Goode, who’s still just a phone call away if needed.

Looks like Shaun Draughn will be starting the season on the PUP list. The depth chart is shrinking for Abdullah!

hmm...odd for it to happen that quickly after camp starts. Hopefully he isn't injured, and this was just a roster move.

In a bit of a surprise Jaguars Offensive Tackle (and former UVA player) Branden Albert announced this morning he is retiring. This could have an effect on our 2 Dukes in the Jags' O-Line pecking order.

Anything to report w/ Khalid and the Giants? Went to their site(painful to do as a Deadskins fan), but didn't see any mention of him. Wishing him the best.

He has been injured the past couple years, and I am thinking he realized his body could not get back to peak NFL condition. You would have to think this is good news for the Dukes, and hopefully Albert has his health going forward into the next chapter of his life.

Latest from big blue interactive:

"Another name I’ve been drawn to all three days is the UDFA RB Khalid Abdullah. Powerfully built, fast in the open field, assertive change of direction with all the balance and body control. NYG has a crowded backfield in front of him but hey, you never know when it comes to injuries. I can’t wait to see him carry the ball in preseason games."

Big Blue View (SBNation):

"Undrafted free agent running back Khalid Abdullah dropped a softly-tossed swing pass from Smith during 11-on-11. In every practice I have been to, dating back to OTAs, Abdullah has dropped at least one pass during the team portions of the workouts."

Oops.

RE: Dukes in Preseason NFL viewing guide
An encouraging quote regarding Josh Wells at Jacksonville...

"I don't want to hand a position to somebody," Marrone said.

"They have to earn it on this team, so we'll look at ways Josh Wells can play out there. I think Patrick (Omameh) can play out there. Seeing if something is going to happen when I talked to management, bringing somebody in. We really haven't had a lot of time to discuss that, but I know in my mind, I want to make sure that Cam goes out there and earns that position."

edit note: Wells worked with the 1st team OL unit on Monday & Tuesday this week...while the '17 high draft pick, Cam Robinson, may eventually take over as the starting left tackle for the Jags, I think Josh's chances of making the final roster and actually competing for a starting job are very good

RE: Dukes in Preseason NFL viewing guide
Some nice comments from Panthers HC Ron Rivera about Dean Marlowe after Tuesday's practice...

With safety Mike Adams getting a vet day off, safety Dean Marlowe got an opportunity to play alongside Kurt Coleman on the first team.

“He has to ascend. He has to continue to show that he can grow and better, which I think he has,” Rivera said. “He’s a very physical guy – he’s one of the guys that has to learn to tempo his practice a little bit better. But I like the energy and the physicality he brings. He’s got the tools and he’s got the look of an NFL safety.

Barring no major screw ups in preseason games, looks like Derek Hart will be the Packers' long snapper. He's getting good reviews and appears the Pack are not bringing in anybody to challenge him for the role. Of course, with most specialists, it only takes one gaffe for that to change immediately - especially for a rookie. But, at least so far, so good.

"A quick note about Khalid Abdullah: I know some of you are high on him, but the undrafted free agent simply cannot catch the football. He drops at least one relatively easy pass during team drills just about every day, at least on the days when I have been at practice."

Ouch...

I don't remember him having troubles catching the ball while at JMU.
