RE: Tom Flacco has left the program
All that tells me is that Flacco knew he was losing the battle and bolted. Hope he gets a shot to make an impact at Rutgers.

The narrative seems to be reality as Wassink was defined as the starter by Lester... prompting Flacco to transfer.

Lester announced Wassink as the starter after the announcement of Flacco leaving. Do you have some inside knowledge as to what went on behind the scenes, that supports your last statement?

As Hoekjeness indicated in another thread - Jack Doles from WOODTV reported that Lester made Wassink the official starter and cited this as the reason Flacco left the program.

Well.... Andy Pepper told a different story tonight on channel 3 sports. Said that Lester told him (Andy) that Flacco asked him who was going to be the starter this year, and his response was that he would make that decision a week before the USC game. Flacco was uncomfortable with the answer and decided to transfer. Then he (Lester) appointed Wassink the starter.

I'm inclined to believe Andy's version as he routinely covers WMU. Also, I checked Jack Doles twitter feed sometime ago and never saw any tweets on the Flacco/Wassink competition. I'll take what I hear directly as opposed to second hand news. Besides, channel 3 puts a lot more effort into covering WMU than any news outlet in Grand Rapids.

I saw the Doles tweets... whether deleted or not... should have copied them here...

Regardless... my guess is that writing was on the wall. Flacco wanted more commitment that he would be the starter. Didn't get it and left. Best of luck to him. I'm fully behind Wassink at this point... watch his HS tape... not worried.

Well it's not second hand, it was straight from Jack Doles Twitter feed (no different).

Although Jack Doles is better connected than you probably think, I do agree with you that I would 100% take Andy's word on it.

My guess is Jack misunderstood or miscommunicated.

RE: Tom Flacco has left the program
Flacco is gone and I appreciate all that he contributed to Bronco football and wish him well at Rutgers...would love to see him excel there.

Now...

- His departure eliminates any drama and disharmony that may have transpired.

- All positions are open for competition and a player must earn the starting role based on this competition. Lester was just being honest as a coach.

- Wassink is the considered starter at this time, but it is not an absolute. Once competition among ALL the QB's begin, he must prove himself as the starter.

- Lester and his staff have experience in coaching at many levels. Lester also loves WMU, and it is his "dream job." He will do everything he can to
make Bronco football a winning program with integrity.

Rutgers is a step down football wise. Hopefully he uses them to get his degree.
