It appears that we now only have one paid assistant coach, Pope, who does pitchers, clearly our weakest link last season. Wonder what our AD has in mind?

Why are you starting yet another thread (you started the last one, as well) on the same subject?
First off, as others have stated, the NCAA allows only two paid assistant coaches. Consequently, the only opening is for Van Hook's replacement. (Unless, of course, Van Hook hires his UT buddy, Scott Shepperd, as one of his assistants. I think it's highly unlikely Scott gets promoted to the open assistant coaching slot at Rice, so it would not be a big surprise if he jumps at the opportunity to be a paid assistant elsewhere.)
Second, assistant coaching spots are filled by the Head Coach; not the AD, though the AD would usually be involved in the interview process and have a say in the hiring process.

Van Hook can't hire Sheppard. Van Hook is an assistant at OU. Maybe you're referring to Hallmark at UIW.

Yep, my mistake.
