Bolden to Kreitzburg against the Skinhawks. It may have been my angle from the corner of the student section, but I recall that being pretty impressive in a clutch moment.

I guess no one posted it, but #4 was Wasean Tait scoring in 2OT against Nevada.

#3 Gradkowski to Moore against Pittsburgh

So, that's not #1 as so many have predicted. Actually, they've been calling these the greatest "moments" and not plays, so I wonder if that will affect what comes out on top.

I remember a different pass to Kreitzburg that was equally big. It was Chris Wallace to Kreitzburg in a 1997 game against the Redskin/Hawks for a first down to keep the Rockets undefeated, kept the ranking and kept us on track to get into the first MACC. Then we lose to Ball State the next week after being ranked #18. It was a huge play at the time and I haven't forgotten it 20 years later. The game was played the day after Halloween, I remember bringing a bunch of leftover candy down for my niece and nephew. Weird I can remember that.

I think the game you are remembering was a corner route in the end zone that he leaped up to snag for a TD. I remember him having a big catch in another game, but I don't remember it as well.

"Nerd up the middle" checks in at Number Two. Not a bad choice. Can't believe Ken Crots would be left out but hard to believe he's Number One, too.

But he did keep the unbeaten streak alive, and that probably is the most significant aspect of UT football history, so I won't be surprised if it is #1. Honestly, can't really think of any other play or moment that hasn't already been in the list, so I'm anxious to find out!

Wallace was the QB in the 1997 game and was also the starter in 1998. Kreitzburg graduated in 1998 and I don't know if he ever caught a pass from Bolden, who didn't become a starter or play much until halfway through the 1999 season. Wallace hit Mace Freeman for the winning TD after Toledo blew a big lead to get the win in 1997. During that final drive, Wallace hit Kreitzburg over the middle for a crucial first down - and I think it was on 4th down (not sure) and long. Bolden came on midway in 1999 and was the starter in 2000 and 2001. Bolden became the starter in 1999 (after the QB from Monroe - Cole - bombed out and went on another board to air out his feelings against the fans who were calling him out before quitting the team).

Well, earlier I picked it or the Pittsburgh play as Number one. The fact that there really wasn't much of a streak at that time is the only thing against it, I guess, but it was a rivalry game, on the road, the (perhaps apocryphal) big wind that died at the optimal moment: all the stuff of legends. Croats went on into NCAA history and so did those Rockets.

Ahh, yes, I stand corrected. Had my qb's mixed up. Definitely was Wallace that I was thinking of. Must have had one too many colas in the dorm room at halftime (the perks of living in Carter)

Interestingly enough, UT just posted their montage of greatest placekickers.... No Crots. Also No Steigerwald. Hmmm.

Not much video from back then but the guy was awfully accurate-a then NCAA record 77 straight EPs, IIRC. Took some classes with his brother Virgil, also a kicker, but never the top guy.

Funny thing is - now I'm pretty sure it was not Kreitzburg I remember Wallace hitting with that pass over the middle for the first down. I'm now thinking it was Mace Freeman or maybe even Lyle Green. It was someone I was not expecting it to be thrown to, and also someone that I did not expect to make that catch. It was a beautiful pro level pass - perfectly thrown and led him in stride and had a lot of zip on it. I didn't know until that play that Wallace had that kind of an arm.

I also remember the Kreitzburg catch you are referring to - in the corner of the end zone (Northeast side) where he jumped up over the defender to make the catch for a TD that was for the win with little time left on the clock. I think I had it reversed in my previous comments. Now I'm almost certain it was Freeman that caught the pass over the middle and Kreitzburg that made the winning catch in that game, not the other way around as I stated before. The DVR in my head remembers both catches, but the play-back button is not working so well.

Found this site while trying to research that Miami game. Toledo with 3 of the top 10 upsets by the MAC - including the #2 (vs. Pittsburgh). May have been posted somewhere else before:

Great article. Brings back fond memories of the 35-0 Rockets. I wasn't at the game ,
so it is not my favorite game, but I can't disagree with1 it being number one.

Oddly, the FB picture accompanying the blurb for Number One shows Crots ( I think) kicking at the Glass Bowl. Can't believe there aren't shots of him making that walk-off against BG. Of course, George Kiem also hit a 38 harder, IIRC, for a walk-off against Villanova during the streak, but it wasn't BG so not as dramatic.

To get a pass interference call on a last minute drive to win or lose at an away game against a packed stadium, the ref should at least get an honorable mention.

I don't think I ever heard a comparison of trying to tackle Ealey like "trying to catch a greasy worm". Don't think that would be very tough. Trying to pick it up in one piece might be a problem...
