Right, they don't carry the same stigma as in times past. Why? Because our world is not being led by 90 year old men who would view them as bad but rather more and more by people young enough to have grown to accept them. Hell, even AT&T released a policy recently that stated that retail store employees could now uncover their tats of an unoffensive nature because it could help them be more relate-able to their growing number of younger customers. The paradigm has shifted.

My cousin is involved late in the hiring process for his company and because of the work they do for the state and federal government they have to have contractor level security clearances. We used to compare "stupid interviewee" stories whenever we would get together. One day he calls me out of the blue laughing and saying "You'll never top this one." Seems they were doing the final interview prior to tendering a conditional offer pending the drug screening when my cousin noticed a seven year gap in employment both on the application and in the required resume. He asked if it was n oversight and the applicant replied "No. During that time I was serving a sentence for assault with a deadly weapon. Is that going to be a problem?" He said he was dumbfounded for a minute then replied "Yes it is as you will not pass a required background check so we can't offer you the position." He said they then had to explain to him that even some minor misdemeanors and even some associations were enough to cause someone to fail this type of background check so with a felony record he would never pass. After the guy left his boss, also in the interview went ballistic on the people who were involved in the process before as he never should have gotten that far in the process. I had to give him credit....my stories of smurf blue hair, pierced noses and people being currently suspended for DUI didn't compare anymore.

I've noticed an ironic, perhaps hypocritical, attitude amongst those with tattoos. They scold you if you look at them funny because of their ink, but they have no problem judging you because you're ink free. Manhood and stuff is the general vibe I get from those who are inked.

It's odd indeed. A felony with a weapon? Phershaw!

(Speaking generally below)

Visible tattoos, body modifications or other identifiable lifestyle choice identifiers puts me as the hiring manager in a weird spot since a person who treats their body like an coloring book demands that I notice that they are edgy, different or snowflaky with issues and concerns that I have to manage as their boss, but at the same time demands that I make no comment about it, draw no conclusions from it, express no aversion toward it, and treat them no differently because of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's something we struggle with at work. We just hired a wonderful young lady, professional, well groomed, great background etc. She showed up the first day of work with a blue hair in a feminist style haircut. You know what I'm describing, right? So far so good but it's eggshells around her until I can figure out if there is a trigger angle.

I learned a lesson about five years ago when I was talking to an employee who was going on a short, local business trip with me to a client. She asked about expectations and I said the two of us are just going to "smile and nod, boys, smile and nod" because that was a saying from the popular Madagascar or Penguins movie, I don't remember which.

Later that day HR had a convo with me about not treating her with respect because I made that comment about the both of us. Amazing. She quit soon after to go back to school to be a social worker. /shrugs shoulders

I'm not a hiring manager, but my post before yours is similar in nature. They don't want you to judge them, but have no problem judging you for (possibly) judging them.

Yeah, we had it much easier. Offensive tattoos were an automatic dis-qualifier and any non-offensive tattoos had to be covered by your uniform. Sucked for the guys who had to wear long sleeves all the time in SC. No piercings other than female ears as well, and they were only allowed studs. No non-natural hair colors and we had military style hair standards.

The firehouse can be an unforgiving place if you are easily offended. Luckily the women we did have were capable of dishing it out just as much as they took it. We only really ran into problems when we dealt with EMS being stationed with us and even then it was just about 50/50 male and female complaints. Like the 300lb vegan paramedic who complained when we nicknamed him "Meat Snack". 03-lmfao

That may be but I've never looked down on anyone for any reason like that. I have counseled young people to wait for their first tat as they may decide they don't want something like that on their bodies for the rest of their lives. Anyone who would act like you described probably is just insufferably arrogant to begin with, tatted or not.

I love those tats that look like the persons arm is mechanical with screws and hinges and wiring all throughout. I guess these types of tats will eventually look like a rusted old machine too when the person gets old. But, I have to admit...that, is art.

Quote:A teen dad with “DEVAST8” tattooed across half his face has turned down 45 job offers as he is “waiting for the right one to come along” – after his desperate work plea went viral.

New Zealander Mark Cropp, 19, went on social media to beg someone to give him a break and let him prove he can be responsible and hold down a full-time job after leaving prison.

Within hours he revealed he had been deluged with job opportunities and admitted he “stopped counting” when the number of offers reached 45.

But he told the Daily Mail Australia he still hasn’t “done a day’s work” claiming he is “just waiting for the right one to come about”.

Actually, still led by old men who got them to "rebel" in their youth. They have lost all stock as a symbol of rebellion or value as something to set you aside as interesting. I suspect the type of people who would have been getting them 20 years ago will fall into two camps.

Camp A) will go from little tats and tramp stamps to nothing, because they literally mean nothing anymore.

Camp B) Will go from little tats and tramp stamps to ridiculous "art" covering their entire upper torso to go along with studs and body mutilation so they can be "different".

I suspect group A will dwarf group B and a lot but who knows. Either way the real money will be in removal when you realize that dragon on your 20 year old arm which made you "interesting" is a glob on your 40 yo arm which makes you look like a fool.
