Our rivals are Tulsa (teh), Memphis (fear), Smoo (7-Eleven), and C. Florida (winner goes to Big XII).

We have no real rivalries. Some of our old regional SWC rivals like UT and Aggie would likely raise the blood pressure of our fan base---but they won't play us. Tech is the only one that still plays us and that game will likely sell out. The reality is, because of the conference jumping and years as an Indy team, we have no true rivals. Right now--our rivals are whoever is in the spot in front of us in the standings. So, of late, that has been teams like Memphis, Temple, and Navy. Of course, that kind of "rival" will change every year.

I've been an advocate of signing a late season long term series (say 10 years) with BYU. Call it the Battle of the Cougars" and play it late in the season when BYU struggles to get games. Based on how well attended and exciting the last series with them was---I think it could really develop quicklly into a game Coog fans look forward to all year. 04-cheers

Really? We started playing you 22 years before you joined the swc, we have played every year except for short periods at the end of the 80s and 90s. Pretty sure you have more games against us than anyone else. We ruined bowl bids and top ten rankings for you. You were the last team to score a 100 points in a game and you did it against us. Both teams have "ran the score up" in recent history. Essentially the thing that has stayed constant for both football programs has been us playing each other through every conference we have been in.

Not saying we have to be a rival, just saying your points for dismisal seem a bit shakey.

Did you look at the chart. There are not any rivals listed for UH. I'd say thats a pretty accurate representation of the fan base. There is no team on the schedule that Coog fans point to at the start of every year. Yes, we have played Tulsa a lot. If that was going to be a "thing" with Coog fans it would be by now. When you guys are really good (like this year)---I think you'll be one we point to---but thats just following what I said---our "rival" is whoever is in front of in the standings.

There is no game that matters above all else to Coog fans on the schedule. There is no game for UH where the records where both teams could be bad---and it would still be a "big game". There is no game that mimics Texas vs A&M or Ohio vs Michigan that appears every season for UH. The closest would probably be Rice....and a lot of Coog fans could care less about that one (the kids seem to like that one a lot--older fans yawn). Maybe we just define "rivals" differently.

Im not trying to insult---its just how things have worked out here. Other than the SWC---we really havent been in a conference where we would have consistent games vs regional teams that the local fans get juiced up to beat based on name alone. Of late---our fans getting juiced up has been about beating the team in front of us in the standing or beating a ranked team.

Well said, Attackcoog

I think we can create one with Temple... Both big cities Houston n Philadelphia are almost identical, if we could some how get our two majors involved before our matchups.

We've played Tulsa more than any other team. We've shared 3 different conferences with the Hurricane. The 100-6 game is pretty damn famous to any UH/TU fan with a sense of history.

It's a rivalry. It's just not a fierce one.

Interesting and unexpected. Surprised to see Temple/UCONN over SMU/Tulsa/Memphis.

SMU
We've been trying to develop something anything from SMU but nothing ever seems to develop.

Tulsa
Yes, we play them quite a bit but majority here (Houston) just don't see anything from playing them, just another game on our schedule to say the least.

Memphis
They're basically a basketball program... I could've place them in my basketball rivalry list but than again I'm pretty happy with my current choices above.

Basketball program whooped you last year before your beloved Herman went to UT and left you with AppleSoft

We had something cooking with UCF but recently that's gone stale since we've sucked.
Tulsa was kind of a thing but again our recent history has killed that momentum.
Navy could be something since we're kind of close but we've got to actually be in the damn game once in a while.
I'd like to see something eventually develop with Temple since we've got some history.

If you have to try to convince fans it's a rivalry---then it's not. The Game of Century is one of biggest games in UH history. Doesn't mean UH-UCLA is a rivalry. Do you ever see Tuck Fulsa shirts? Probably not---but I bet you have seen plenty of Ruck Fice shirts.

RE: Rivalries
At least you can make an argument for Tulsa as a rival. What compelling argument is there for Temple? Navy has played UH in a few meaningful games recently and UCF has been a nemesis but come on, Tulsa has decades of history and even bad blood. Even Cincinnati and East Carolina are bigger rivals than the three you named, especially Cincy.

Unexpected, but I'll take a rivalry with Houston. Of the schools in this conference, Houston is arguably the most similar.

Looking forward to the start of football.

The conference teams on our schedule that I take a special interest for football include Memphis and Houston. I am not sure that we can consider our teams rivals though. In basketball, Memphis and UConn are rivals and SMU and Houston are special interest games. If the conference stays together and they continue to develop their programs, they will become rivals.

You take a special interest into watching Cincinnati basketball repeatedly pound Houston into the ground?

That'll change one day but I find it improbable that you care a lick when UC has to play Houston.

Guilty as charged! I am amazed at the record in consideration that Houston has had at least two very strong eras in basketball(late sixties and mid eighties). The Houston game is generally competitive and one of the victories has come in our latest conference. Houston gets my attention.

RE: Rivalries
I consider TCU our only true rival - similar student bodies, 30 miles apart, played each other in football and hoops for over 100 years. They have the edge in football all-time 48-40-8. We lead in basketball all-time 106-85.

During our SWC days we had rivalries with UT, Texas A&M, Rice, Baylor and Texas Tech but those faded after the conference broke up in the mid 90s.

I'd say Houston is the only other school that is close to a rivalry. In hoops we are starting to developing a rivalry with UConn and Cincy. I doubt either consider us a rival but a few more years competing at our current level and we might get there.

I like Houston as a rival. Similar schools in big cities with big markets.

I like Houston as well but would rank as follows:

Football

USF
Navy
UConn

Basketball

Uconn
Cinci
Smu

The reason for UConn in football, is the history of close games and the ones "stolen" from the Owls after the Owls were booted out of the conference.

I feel like the info is pretty stale. Seems like 2012 data.

I feel like Southern Miss is falling off, since we don't ever play them anymore. Same with Marshall.

Also consider VT a bigger rival than Chapel Hill or NC State just because of frequency. Although don't really have any of that necessary hate for VT.

Also, we're ODU's biggest rival? Have we played them more than once?

Laugh all you want about Tulsa, but it's a rival and not just in football. Tulsa is a thorn in our side in basketball, softball, track and field (their distance program is a threat to our sprint team in racking up points), and tennis. We are often recruiting the same kids as well.

As for football, we've played Tulsa more than anyone. That matters. We've played Temple about 4 or 5 times and we don't even play them regularly in conference because we're in different divisions.

Someone choosing Temple as a rival and mocking the idea that Tulsa could be has clearly been a UH fan for two seasons.

We essentially don't have any rivals other than maybe Rice. Look at attendance figures. If Tulsa was some big rivalry there would be an attendance bump (like you see for the Rice game). The well attended games are key games for the conference race and games against ranked teams. It is what it is. There is no reason to try to puff a bunch of hot air into something trying to make it something it isn't. Coog fans don't see anything special in the Tulsa game. I don't care if we have played them 1000 times prior to today---Coog fans don't get all revved up for that game over all others. That's what rivalry games bring to the table and this one doesn't do it. Maybe one day in the future---but I kinda feel like if it was going to be a thing it would be by now.

Temple's not really a rival. Temple has been a key game in the conference race of late and that game has taken on a higher profile due to that. If either of us were to drop off in importance--the game would likely lose a lot of its attractiveness. The Tulsa game will be important for the same reason this year.
