Exclamation 4 P5 FB road trips I'd like to see the Dukes make
We know we have NC State and West Va coming up to get us thru 2019. Here are 4 I'd love to see coming up as we head into the 20's...(intentionally leaving out UNCheat, NCSU, WVU, etc., since we've played there recently or will before 2020)

4. Duke - we could put a lot of purple in their stadium...gorgeous campus, driveable for most JMU fans, winnable game (though Duke is by far from the pushover they were pre-Cutcliffe)

3. Pittsburgh - driveable for a lot of JMU fans, downtown area is fabulous now, they have a casino walking distance near Heinz Field, good fanbase, they rarely fill their stadium or anywhere close to it so plenty of (cheap) tickets will be available near the field via the online broker marketers

2. Navy - OK OK they aren't P5, but I'll make a slight convenient exception for the Mids like most of the P5 conferences do when demanding they play P5 opponents OOC...I've been there 3 times and talk about the greatest, classiest welcoming fanbase in the world...watching the Mids march onto the field is a wonderful thing and then when the Mids do a salute to the opposing fans' section it just makes it even better...again, driveable for a lot of JMU fans...Annapolis is a great place to just walk around for hours for those who have never been there, the Naval Academy museums alone are worth it

and...

1. Tennessee - I admit I am biased having a son who is a Vols alum. I've been in Neyland both as an opposing fan and when rooting for the Big Orange. UT had a long-standing unwritten policy of avoiding playing D1AA teams, but they have relaxed that the last few years and apparently will continue to host 1 each year. The Smokies nearby make for a great long weekend. It would be a great opportunity to see one of CFB palaces for JMU faithful.

Admittedly, I have been in all of these stadium in the past multiple times. I'd love to see Dukes faithful get to these venues one day regardless of whether we are 1AA or G5.

Note, while Maryland has a game hosting Towson in 2020, I think the Big 10 is starting to frown upon hosting D1AA opponents as they also move to 9 conference games + 1 P5 opponent mandatory and a continued relationship with the MAC.

Others you'd like to see in the next decade?

I also thought about Penn State. Would absolutely love it. It is one that I haven't been to. I don't think the Big 10 and Penn State are going to host D1AA programs once we get to 2020, but could be wrong. Of course, we may be G5 by then and it is a non-issue. We'll see.

That's correct. Maryland and Rutgers are the only Big 10 schools with FCS games remaining on their future schedules. They were all signed prior to the Big 10 "no FCS" scheduling agreement and are therefore still being played as scheduled to avoid paying out higher and then paying again to schedule an even pricier G5 school.

Though we've experienced Duke, I could go for it again. Definitely Appy. I really like this ECU deal, though I wish they were coming off one of their more normal seasons of better than average football. I too like the suggestion of Pitt. These teams we should come closer to competing with and taking a game down to the last few minutes. However, with each of these teams we'd be sacrificing a minimum of $100K vs playing a Tech, UMD, or UNC. I was a little shocked SMU signed a deal for as much cash as they paid.

Just curious, Wear Purple, did you not go to the Duke game in '08?

I joked in 2008 that the best thing about playing at Duke was being able to go to Chapel Hill and hit Franklin Street post-game. lol

The Vols are a stretch. JMU should be able to schedule the other three at BFS too if... Those kinds of teams at BFS would be awesome and probably 1,2,3 it largest attended events in Rock Co. history.

I'd always welcome playing Navy. Went there as an MRD in '88 and '89. The year we played the Navy Hymn and the whole place just stopped....it was amazing. Their fans were so thankful and gracious as we left the stadium, it was one of the very best memories I have of my time at JMU.

I wouldn't mind seeing us schedule winnable P5 games, even if the payout is a little less. Thinking Duke (though maybe not as winnable as it used to be), Vandy, Wake Forest. The Pitt idea's a good one too

UVA and Va Tech are still my first 2 choices by far.
I agree that Navy would be a great get too. They truly have an international following and some clout in FBS. Plus it is less than a 3 hour bus trip.
I like the games at Maryland for proximity and affinity with our alumni geography. But I like Navy more.

I was in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium 3 days before 911 for a game. Who'da thunk 3 days later a large percentage of those Mids' careers would change significantly - well, all of us for that matter.

I'd love to see JMU head up to West Point to the "Banks of the Hudson" to play the USMA as well.

I have several different groups of friends from the 757 with season tix to USC. Evidently the tailgate scene is pretty good there and not too bad a drive for a lot of JMU folks.

It really was, Hyper...and the cherry on top was the fact that JMU actually won the game 04-cheers
