All the travel, the long hours, the year round recruiting, the time with donors and administrators, etc? This is by no means an attempt to disparage Berkman -- he's my favorite player and I wear his jersey routinely -- this is just asking the question whether he has the fire to take on such a demanding job.

He has said repeatedly in the past they'd he wanted to be a college head coach one day. I agree with you about the grind, which is one reason I would not hire him as a head coach without having him serve at least one year as an assistant coach.

At the risk of sounding like "one of those people who's cousin's barber's uncle's great aunt's nephew" told him XYZ....

I guarantee you Lance wants the job.

And the argument between Pope and Lance can be summed up pretty easily with one word: Recruiting. Coach Pope is a really good coach. His success at CR shows that. However, the average stud baseball player at 17-18 yrs old has never heard of him. They've all heard of Lance. That in itself could lead to stealing some top notch recruits from Texas, TCU, A&M, etc.

Recruiting is THE name of the game. We've already lost one recruit to Florida (Rivera) since Van Hook left. JK needs to make a splash hire....ASAP.

Agreed with all of the above, but...he should not be offered the head coaching job until he serves at least one year as a full assistant coach with recruiting responsibilities.

Lance has been the head baseball coach at Second Baptist for the past two years to shore up his bona fides (and he recently took them to--and won--the state title). This should certainly answer the question as to whether he's willing to take a Rice coach's salary.

Agreed. Hence the reason hiring Lance right now as the "coach in waiting" makes perfect sense. Of course, he and OG would have to agree to this.....and that may be tricky.

Though Pope has the contacts and respect (I assume) of all the UIL HS BB coaches. Often mentioned with assistant FB coaches is their relationship to the HS coaches...the same is true with BB.

With all due respect, I really don't think that is Graham's decision. Negotiation wise I would think that the Rice AD holds pretty much the vast, vast majority of the leverage here.

There's a huge difference in recruiting when comparing baseball to football. Baseball recruiting is much more dependent upon summer ball and their travel programs. Football recruiting still relies upon the HS coach and his relationship with college coaches. Baseball recruiting happens during the summer. I can tel you from very recent and applicable experience that many times a kids college recruiting coach never even talks to the HS coach....he talks to the summer coach. It's much easier for a college coach to get out and travel to recruit during the summer. Almost impossible during the side by side college/high school seasons.

Wayne Graham is 81. If the AD likes Berkman as Graham's successor, this would be the time to set a retirement date and hire him as designated heir. I agree that Berkman's high school coaching demonstrates salary and patience aren't issues.

Again, I wouldn't make any promises about "coach in waiting"; only a commitment from JK that he'll be seriously considered. He's got to first prove himself at the college level. Obviously, if we do bring him on as an assistant coach, the head coaching job will be his to lose.

Lance used to be my favorite former Rice athlete, but at this point I have zero desire for Rice to hire him in any capacity.

Hallmark hired as head coach at UIW. At least we know there's one team that won't surpass us in the Texas baseball ranks.

Aside from the desire to move back home, I'm not sure how this advances Patrick's career. However, I would not be surprised if we play UIW in one of our Fall Ball exhibition games.

It advances it by giving him HC experience in an area that has a ton of HS baseball talent.

Not sure if a head coaching stint at UIW will be perceived as a step up from the primary assistant coaching job at Rice (where he was clearly #2 to The OG) or the pitching coach job at Mizzou.

That's one way to look at it for sure...another way is that if he has any success at all, he can parlay it into a bigger HC job. UIW is in a very fertile recruiting area. Lots of SA kids that may be enticed to stay home and build a program.

So how many former Coach Graham assistants have now been college head coaches?

Rayner Noble, Chris Rupp, David Pierce, Patrick Hallmark. I'm sure I'm missing some but that's at least 4.
