I'm not following. Changing the rule won't really help Mick. Who is considered the top recruit will shift down and the top recruiters will still be getting the best available players. Relatively, we'll be in the same position we are in terms of recruiting top players.

I think the idea is if the really elite players all draft out of HS then what's left would be much closer to one another talent wise.

I don't see any problem with making the kids wait longer for the NBA.

IMO, the NBA minor league structure is light years behind baseball.

With the sheer limitation of roster spots and essentially only 1 developmental league, a high percentage of the high school kids declaring get dumped by the side of the road with no chance to develop as their mind and body mature.

They can always go play in a foreign country for a year. Traveling or living abroad usually hastens the learning curve for a lot of people.

I would never argue that they don't have the right to do it. I just don't like making obvious one and done guys pretend to be college students for 6 months. Not to mention in the extreme case; say LeBron James had been forced to play a year at OSU and suffered a career threatening injury. He probably signed $50 million in endorsements his rookie year plus his guaranteed. If he's in the NBA when that happens he's still set for life. If he's at OSU he's got nothing.

Considering most of these guys come from very little I would like to see them able to make a living as soon as someone is willing to hire them. Obviously they need a more comprehensive professional development program but as long as the players association is willing to sell out the young guys they've got a free development league in college.

I like the MLB rules:

High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;
College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

This way you can be a none and done like a LeBron. You can also go overseas and can sign whenever. You can go Development League. You can go JC and sign whenever.

Now if you want to be a Student Athlete you are ineligible for 3 years.

I believe the college players were eligible for up to $10M (not sure what the highest amount now is) in injury insurance based on where they are projected to go in the NBA draft.

So, this could work both ways for kids coming straight from high school. It's very hard to project high school kids position in the draft and they could knock down the value of several guys who have played a year or two of college which set their projected draft position.

I can see your point. I'm saying there are far more guys who fall into the "Not Lebron James" category than those who do.

let's send Coach Cronin a telegram reminding him that there are outstanding white basketball players out there. UCLA's Alford wasn't too shabby. Not all white athletes are necessarily baseball players, ya lizninnnn? 01-lauramac2

Meanwhile, how is UC's basketball recruiting going? Don't think I've heard a single thing about a class of '19 recruit yet. Are they in on anyone good? Close to any commitments? It's crazy where basketball recruiting has gone over the years.

You mean 2018, right? We have not landed a recruit yet.

It's reached a treacherously low level on this board when race is a topic. Period

Yeah, 2018. I'm getting way too ahead of myself. I haven't heard a single thing about a single recruit yet. I assume we aren't a factor with any Top 100 type guys?

Don't think so. We just aren't a program that attracts those kinds of kids out of high school anymore. There are a number of reasons why... they've all been listed before (conference, style of play, lack of championships/deep run in the NCAAT, shoe companies, etc.).

Our best bet to land those type of guys in the coming years is through transfer, like Kyle Washington.

It's probably not intended for guys on a message board.

I concur (and with Beercat a couple posts above as well).

At first, yes I laughed and scratched my head, but I ultimately see it your way.

it was Tongue in cheek. Mick's done a great job over the years but wonders at times if his mindset prevents him recruiting a caucasian basketball star sometimes.
