RE: Ari Ince update
Congrats to her (and USA Track for making an obvious but correct decision).

I'm trying to remember - would she and Funmi Jimoh be the only two Rice American women now to make the worlds? There haven't been a ton of Rice American men there either - Bryan Bronson and then I'm drawing a blank (maybe Gabriel Luke was on a 4x400 - at least in a preliminary heat?).

ETA - actually I would have to think Regina Cavanaugh might have made a team or two in the shot put??

From her Facebook.

Quote:1) So glad being 2cm shy of auto qualifying won't haunt me for the rest of my life
2) It's never too late to make your first team
3) Can everyone please stop calling me a pole vaulter now?

In Regina's day (the '80s) worlds were only held every 4 years so obviously fewer chances to make a team. I looked through the IAAF archive here and didn't see her in the startlists for '83 or '87. Per the Rice T&F books she was an alternate on the '84 & '88 US Oly teams.

I wondered if Dave Roberts might have competed in the first IAAF world championship (1976 in Malmo, Sweden) in the pole vault, since he'd set a world record that year.

But he did not. Here's why ... (quoting Wikipedia, emphasis mine):

Quote:The 1976 World Championships in Athletics was the first global, international athletics competition organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Hosted on 18 September 1976 in Malmö, Sweden, it featured just one event: a men's 50 kilometres race walk contest. ...

The International Olympic Committee decided to drop the men's 50 km walk from the Olympic athletics programme for the 1976 Montreal Olympics, despite its constant presence at the games since 1932. The IAAF chose to host its own world championship event instead, a month and a half after the Olympics.

It was the first World Championships that the IAAF had hosted separate from the Olympic Games (traditionally the main championship for the sport). ... The two-race 1980 World Championships in Athletics filled in for the lack of a women's 400 metres hurdles and 3000 metres run at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

The (IAAF) competition came of age at the 41-event 1983 World Championships in Athletics, which is considered the first edition proper.

They had nothing to do with it, besides formally accepting the IAAF invitation. No decision involved.

Jon Warren was at the 1997 World Championships in the marathon. Ryan Harlan was at the 2011 World Championships in the decathlon.

Thanks for the info.

Warren was 63rd of the 70 finishers, with a time of 2:45:56. (41 others did not finish.)

Harlan was 22nd (last) of the decathletes who competed in all 10 segments; 8 others withdrew during the event. He no-heighted the pole vault.

RE: Ari Ince update
Tomorrow, Sunday, August 6, Ari Ince will participate in the qualification round of the women's javelin at the IAAF World Championships. She will be in Qualification Group B, which will begin at 2:30 p.m., CDT.

The automatic mark for advancing to the finals is 63.50 meters (208' 4"). If 12 throwers do not reach that distance, the field for the finals will be filled to 12 according to top marks in prelims.

Her lifetime best, achieved this summer, is 61.38 meters (201' 4").

Early coverage (4 a.m.-11 a.m.) is on NBC Sports Channel. The afternoon coverage will be on NBC.

RE: Ari Ince update
Is there any place to watch live video? I can't imagine NBC will show much of the javelin qualifying.

Odd that both the men's and women's marathon are both taking place today. I don't recall any major competition ever before with that type of set-up (outside of city marathons that are run every year). I wonder if that's a nod to security issues?
