RE: What should we do?
Rice finally has an OL and DL for a change. That's where all these games are won or lost. We're usually worn down and have little depth behind the backups. If we can stay healthy, we'll be okay.

Some people thought we had a quality OL entering last season. How exactly did that pan out. I'm scratching my head why you think the OL will be significantly improved?

All these guys have a lot of experience and size. Underclassmen improve quickly as they get playing time and weight training. A lot of very young guys have been relied upon to fill holes over the past two years. That should start to pay off soon. It usually does.

Dream on. We've heard this song before. These guys were not particularly highly regarded coming out of high school, and have shown absolutely nothing in the game action they've experienced so far. They don't magically become quality players.

I'm looking forward to this season. I'm not looking forward, because I expect ten wins, or a bowl. I am looking forward because I always enjoy seeing MY guys fight from beginning to end. I feel sorry for the pessimists.

I agree that Tyler Stehling should be improved this year.

Actually, that's kind of the purpose of having a red-shirt program and a strength and conditioning staff.

I agree that improvement isn't a guaranteed fact. But neither is the supposition that because a player is overmatched at 18, that he must be at 20 as well. When you have a lot of injuries and are forced to play younger players, it can look bad. Those same players can look good after they put on some additional muscle and practice and gel as a unit.

It's reasonable to hope for improvement. None of us will know for sure until games are played.

RE: What should we do?
we'll always be behind the 8 ball, because we have to recruit undersized hs players , who can read and write, and grow 'em. Just about every team in CUSA simply goes out and recruits JC's with two years playing experience to fill in the gaps, and therefore have veteran teams every year. This doesn't count the outlaws who get kicked off other P5 teams and wind up in our conference. This also doesn't count the fact that we basically are limited to recruit the Houston/Austin/Dallas area (with few exceptions) to stay within our ever-diminishing recruiting budget.

Nick Saban wouldn't do any better than Bailiff, imo.

This year we seem to have more vets than the last two years.

Given a 99% chance of losing that game, should we:

a. Hold back on some plays and formations, etc., and save them for UTEP and/or UH?

b. Throw the book at Stanford in an all-out effort to win?

It would be new news if we had plays and formations worth holding back. I believe I reported in another thread that our former OC Edmonson is now the OC at Morton Ranch High School in Katy. Yes, that job comes with teaching four sections of Phys Ed.

RE: What should we do?
I've read that Coach Neely's emphasis every season was on developing a team that
could beat Texas, assuming, I imagine, that if you had that, everything else would fall
into place.

In 1965, he had a team good enough to beat UT and Tommy Nobis and went 2-8.
In 1994, we had a team good enough to beat Texas and finished 5-6.

So, I don't know.

I'll see what I can come up with. I understand that our budget gets trimmed about 10 per cent per year, but couldn't swear to it.

But we had $$$ for developing a new logo. (Or was that paid for by the swag vendor(s)?)

Hate to break this news to you guys, but we will NOT have the national stage to ourselves on August 26. There are three other games scheduled for that Saturday - 1) Oregon St. at Colorado State; 2) Hawaii at Massachusetts; and 3) South Florida at San Jose St. Those games go off at 1:30 pm, 6:00 pm, and 6:30 pm central. Since our game starts at 9 pm central, it will be those other games that get the mentions on the 10 pm sports shows.

Wonder if the AD knew that when we accepted the move to Australia.

How long has this been going on? Everybody here can do the math. What is the source of your understanding? If true, this is serious. Even if it is cut 5%, or kept steady, it is serious. This is an area that should be expanding.

Those three games should do nicely for our warmup acts.

And when they flash a tight halftime score on those 10:20pm sportscasts we might draw in a few more eyeballs for the second half...

Biggest problem with the time slot for this opener is it is in direct competition with the McGregor Mayweather fight.
