Top 25 Returning Basketball Players in the AAC (Based on 16-17 PER)
"The Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a per-minute rating developed by ESPN.com columnist John Hollinger. In John's words, "The PER sums up all a player's positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative accomplishments, and returns a per-minute rating of a player's performance."

Did a little digging and put this list together. All players eligible for the list had to play the full 16-17 season. Data was taken from sports-reference.com

1. Rob Gray Houston G 26.7

2. Tacko Fall UCF C 26.3

3. Darral Willis Wichita St F 26.2

4. Gary Clark Cincy F 24.9

5. Shaquille Morris Wichita St C 24.3

6. Kyle Washington Cincy F 23.9

7. Jacob Evans Cincy G/F 22.8

8. Markis McDuffie Wichita St F 22

9. Jarron Cumberland Cincy G 21.7

10. Landry Chamet Wichita St G 20.2

11. Jarrey Foster SMU G/F 19.4

12. Shake Milton SMU G 19.1

13. Tre Scott Cincy F 18.9

14. Cameron Reynolds Tulane G/F 18.4

15. BJ Taylor UCF G 18.4

16. Kentrell Barkley ECU G/F 18.3

17. Austin Reaves Wichita St G 18.2

18. Jalen Adams UConn G 17.8

19. Junior Etou Tulsa F 17.8

20. Conner Frankamp Wichita St G 17.8

21. Shizz Alston Jr Temple G 17.6

22. Nura Zanna Houston (LIU Brooklyn last season) F 17.2

23. Quinton Rose Temple G/F 16.9

24. Martins Igbanu Tulsa F 16.9

25. Chad Brown UCF F 16.7

--------------------------------------------------------------------

How well do you think this list illustrates who the best players in the American will be going into this upcoming season?

Daquan Jeffries (Tulsa) also had a 18.8 PER at ORU before heading to JUCO for what was effectively a Redshirt season

Tulsa lost one guy (TK Edogi) with a 21.9 PER as well as 3 others with PER's in the single digits. We gain Jeffries + Curran Scott (who had a 14.4 PER at Charlotte before transferring) and two other freshman that we're eager to see contribute. With those additions as well as the experience we have coming back, I expect Tulsa to be a much improved team.

Gonna be a big jump forward for Q Rose this year. Hopefully Enechionyia bounces back after a terrible year.

Not too shabby at all. He would've been one of several additions to the list if I included redshirt players with 15-16 stats.

Darral Willis is a fine player and I am glad to have him in a WSU uniform.

However, I believe this metric significantly overrates him.

Thanks for putting this list together, @BrooklynRocket. It's fun to look at stuff like this, especially as someone trying to familiarize myself with players in the new league.

I honestly think even with the addition of Wichita State, Kentrell Barkley is a 1st Team All-AAC'er this season. I can't believe he hasn't transferred. We just don't hold onto guys like him very often.

RE: Top 25 Returning Basketball Players in the AAC (Based on 16-17 PER)
UC's starting PG, Cane Broome, had a PER of 20.7 in 15-16 before his transfer from Sacred Heart (also averaged just a shade under 24ppg in his sophomore there). So all 5 starters would be in the top 10...nice.

I also think this shows why the AAC, at least this early, seems to be a two horse race at the top.

And this is why UC and Wichita State are the 2 league favorites.

UC and WSU both have 4 players in the top 10. That’s nuts.

And my guess is by seasons end, Cane Broome with be there.

Good point. Tre Scott (#13) and Chad Brown (#25) are without a doubt not two of the top 25 best players in this conference, but they made good use of limited minutes last season, particularly with how they rebounded the ball.

It'll be interesting to see how PER changes for players like Willis and Morris on WSU as they adjust to a tougher conference.
