OT - An appeal from a Duke
I know that most of you have been watching the events associated with Hurricane Harvey. As someone who has lived in Houston for the past fifteen years, I can tell you firsthand that this a complete catastrophe. Other than a new brief periods it has rained here since Friday afternoon. Every creek, bayou, and river in the area has flooded. I have many friends who have had to evacuate their homes and if I wasn't living in a two-story house I would be among that number as well. And the reports coming out of Rockport and Victoria are even more heartbreaking.

I have an appeal to you - do what Dukes do in these situations. Give generously to the Red Cross or any reputable charity of your choice that is providing assistance to folks down here. That truly is the best thing anyone can do at this time.

And after the week I've had I really need the Dukes to boatrace ECU on Saturday.

I have worked 60 hours since Wednesday (business is good) which has kept me from current events. My family has been telling me about Harvey and the devastation being done down in TX. Your post has caused me to pause. I pray for you and the Texans who are experiencing this event. I will find a way to help. Thank you.

This is something anyone who can donate should do so. People and family are losing their homes, lives, etc.

Find a way to give - Red Cross is an easy option.

Coworker of mine has been sending pictures from his suburb just outside of Houston and it's definitely something to see. Thankfully their house hasn't been affected, but they have neighbors just a few streets over that aren't so lucky...

Just made a donation to American Red Cross. Encourage others to do the same.

Bump - Count your blessings folks, as we trade barbs w/ ECU people. They're some people in dire need of help, do as much or as little as you're comfortable with- but in the "Dukes Give Back" spirit please help out.

I live on Long Island. After Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, I would DISCOURAGE anyone from donating to the Red Cross.
While I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of people donating to support Houston's relief and recovery efforts, a much better use of the money would be local Houston area charities where the money will actually find its way to the people who need it, and in a timely manner.

A couple of additional donation options:
Houston Food Bank
Houston SPCA
Star of Hope (they provide homeless and transitional living services)
Greater Houston YMCA
United Way
Salvation Army

Good lists from NPR. Hard to believe there's scum that take advantage of situations like this but such is the case.

How you can help people...

Scams to avoid...
